Q about modifying a Maglite Solitaire

If I take a normal Maglite Solitaire and pull out its normal globe and just stick in a LED bulb will it work, or is there more to it than just that.

There is a lot more to it than that. You need a step-up DC-DC converter circuit to boost the 1.5V battery voltage to 3.5V required to drive a white LED. If you are looking to power something more than a 3mm white LED, then it gets more complicated. You will need to provide enough current to drive the LED. Plan on at least 200mA. 350mA or greater will drive the LED with the brightness you would expect from a decent LED flashlight, but will do so at the expense of battery life.

The Sandwich Shoppe sells Solitaire drop-in modules with a SMJ 3mm LED. That is the easy way to update the anemic little Mag.

If you are feeling more adventurous, you may want to check out the Solitaire+Rebel mod that ROK did. Building the LED driver is fairly easy if you are comfortable with a soldering iron/soldering station. You will need to ensure proper heatsinking, and use a reflector that will work with your LED of choice.

Of course, you could just buy an L0D CE, and retire the Solitaire all together.
