I decided to modify my QIII with a Cree so replaced what I had in it (TWOH), put it all back together and. . . . . . . not a usable beam. :( Had a hole in it. So I took it apart again, and filed the back of the reflector to where it woudl allow the Cree to fit through, and . . . . . . . a little to forward now. So I took a really small O-ring and placed it between the bottom of the reflector and the top of the Cree board (raising the reflector about one millimeter) and. . . voila. A nice beam! Typical QIII reflector appearance, just brighter and whiter. :D

Just in case you're not aware of it, you have to watch the reflector doesn't touch the contact points on either side of the ring. I used Kapton tape on the back of the reflector. It sounds like the O-ring you're using will accomplish the same.

Thanks for the comments! :)

It was a fairly easy mod with the hardest part being the modification of the reflector and finding a spacer between it and those contacts. I've had that little O-ring for the longest time with no idea what I'd ever do with it. I'm glad I kept it! The Cree I got was on that is on the warm side, so comparing it to most of my other LED lights really makes them show their cool color temperature. That makes me really like this QIII now. Puts out a lot of light. I may have to take a picture of a side comparison between a 3W Fenix and this QIII. It should show how much more side spill there is and brighter hotspot, even with the textured reflector.

Perhaps there may be many others who do the QIII Cree mod now. :)
