This light:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1137

Has anyone here bought one? Please tell me about it.

Is the light metal? I can't tell from the webpage.

Does it have any kind of driver circuit or does it just use a resistor?

Is this light decent quality? How's the color? Beamshots?

What's the battery runtime like? Anyone done runtime tests?

If you know the answer to any of these questions, I'd appreciate it!

Looks like the old FifthUnit stuff with a different name.

Yep it is, since FifthUnit is now DealExtreme. Do you know anything about this light?

We are going to have a huge family reunion this summer and we want to give everyone (especially the little kids!) an LED flashlight to use for a big family game of Capture the Flag in the woods. It's gonna be mayhem, utter MAYHEM! http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/images/icons/buttrock.gif

But we aren't rich so we need to find a cheap light that has good quality, good runtime, and runs on AA for convenience and price, we can get a brick of AA batteries for cheap :D

what do you like most about it? 1 aa battery? multi-led array? there are better ones in each category on that site. ELLY is highly recommended and easy to mod later (and you will be modding if you hang around here!)

wait, you've already bought 5 of the ELLY! and modded them no less!

why don't you pick up a 2 buck light and fill us in. not much risk there, is there?

I do like the Elly, I have already modded 5 of them :) I'm just looking for a cheaper light that still uses AA's. I edited my previous post, explaining what it's for. We are probably looking to buy at least 30 lights. The difference $5.30 vs. $1.90 means it would cost us $100 more if we went with the Elly lights for everyone

That's how come I am interested in this light.

Oh also, if anyone knows of any other 1AA lights that are decent quality for under $2 please let me know. Help us make our family reunion awesome!

I will have to, if nobody else here knows about them. I thought EngrPaul had some though and modded them or something. If nobody knows I'll just buy one, but i hate to have to do that, since the shipping takes so long. I have found that shipping from DealExtreme / Fifthunit takes over a month to get to me. If I knew they were good I'd just order the whole mess of them now.

I have two of them and I can´t say I like them all that much. Bought them for my kids and they don´t use em.
Bad fitting of the tailcap, very different output, rather bluetinted, shines roughly half of the output of my Solitaire with Arcmania LED-conversion... guess its about three to five lumens in a floody pattern. Runtime is quite good though...the kids usually forgets about turning them off and they are still on their first set of AA´s.

Wait a second, let's just be logical here... The DIOD has to have a boost circuit, doesn't it? After all, 1.5 volts is not enough to light up an LED is it? I have never heard of a white LED that would light up right with 1.5 volts. Am I wrong?

It's sounding to me like this light might be just the thing...

The case is all aluminum, and I like the quality. It's turned on with a twist of the tailcap (a twisty) . It has a driver circuit. The color is very blue. I replaced the LED's with BestHK's whitest 25K LED's, and now the color is very nice for a 5mm LED product. It's disassembled by pulling the silverish head straight off of the light (not by unscrewing). The LED's are not on the driver board, so they are easy to unsolder and install new one. Tapered LED's are not required. Based on the current used, I estimated 5 hours runtime.

12 led Ghost is a much better version of this torch.

Quality China

And I'll second the DX Lyckerby

I have several of both.

Ideal for keeping one in each of your dark cupboards.

Hellbore,
Another option might be buying a bunch of DE's 10/4.99 keychain leds. I bought a bunch of them to hand out at a campout we have here at our place in the woods... They work really well and should get everyone through the gameand more... I think they have a run time of 6-8 hours...

Thanks for the replies. I just kind of wanted to avoid using the 3-AAA form factor because AAA batteries cost more, plus I would have to buy 3 batteries per each person vs. just 1 battery.

The Diod is pretty good in my book, even w/o upgrading the led's. Good deal.
