Is it possible to make the Luna Sol so that the 3 mm LED's don't light when the high beam comes on? I am asking because it seems to me that the battery life on high would be quite a bit longer if the Nichia's weren't on at the same time.

There is only 18mA going to the nichia ring of emitters. So the gain when compared to the 400 mA which is driving the Golden dragon. In the case of the Lunasol 20 I really do not think that the additional runtime would be signifigant.
Of course I could be wrong.
Based on some rough math the LOW current draw on the lunasol is about 10% of the LOW on a McLuxIII PD.
Again I really doubt that this will add a bunch of runtime to the light if High only ran the cree (lunasol 27) or the golden dragon (Lunasol 20).
Again I could be wrong and if I akm PLease correct me I would like to know how far I am off.

Yaesumofo, the LED's are driven in series and as a result, there is more power pulled from the battery on the Nichias than is the case with a PD on low. Probably 90mA at 2.9V pulled for the Nichias and 40-50 mA on the PD.

A unified converter that managed both the Nichias and the single high power LED could certainly be configured in an either/or situation. As it now stands with two discreet converters, shutting off the mother when the daughter is activated would require a nontrivial design change and it isn't going to happen. Sorry.

Thanks Don for clearing that up. I suppose that was some sort of wishful math on my part.:ohgeez:

Thank you guys for the responses.

Don, once JS writes his review, you won't have any time left on your hands because of the demand that your fine lights and his fine reviews create.

Thanks :)> ! That's a nice thing to say! I certainly hope my review can live up to it.

We'll need an announcement 24h prior to release ... :D :nana:

P.S.: looking forward to it, too :)
