I doubt there are actual air combat groups.
Water combat = ships sink and you recover them when the excitement is over.
Air combat = planes are shot down and get transformed into lots of expensive bits of balsa and plastic.

They use relatively cheap and durable cut-foam models.

hmm, what about a .22 or maybe even a 410 shell?

recoil would be horrid, though.

I assume (hope) they take appropriate safety precautions.

Sounds fun, but I'm glad I don't live close enough...

I don't think their propulsion systems capable of countering that kinda recoil...and a 410 might just take out the balsa turret assembly :ohgeez::naughty:
a .22 maybe....but anything greater might look something like this in scale

I wonder if anyone came up with a functioning scale model of Yamato yet

Anyone ever been to the [SIZE=-1]Byron's Aviation Expo in Ankeny, Iowa? It used to be in Ida Grove. Not sure if they still have it, haven't been there in years. Anyways, it was an R/C air show that lasted 5 days and at the end, they would reenact Pearl Harbor with R/C planes, huge R/C battleships and R/C tanks. They would blow the planes up in mid air and they had barrels of fuel behind a hill that they would explode into giant fire balls where you could even feel the heat. But looking on the internet, I can't seem to find much on it so I don't think they do it anymore.

Were any of you lucky enough to visit Scarborough in the UK at all during the 80/90's

At Peaseholm (Peaceholme?) Park they held naval battles every day viewed by a paying audience on tiered seating. They weren't RC though, they were manned by a human sitting down in the hull of the boat, looking out through a slit in the superstructure! They were powered and great fun to watch. I think they fired blank rounds, the sound was awesome! Even better they had a submarine which occasionally showed up and sank people!

The grand finale of every show was the "Air Raid" where two model planes would shoot down tensioned wires (I think with a line-rocket for effect) and win the day!

Regarding the original post, it would be cool if you could call in artillery, i.e. the owner could be on the shore with a shotgun! Might not be quite in the spirit of things though!

Edit - This brought it all back to me! Had to google this to see if it still happened, check out the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7R6Pf7fZdI
