Hi all,

I'd like to get a green laser but I'm not really sure where I should buy it. I see great prices at dealextreme.com but I've also read about the lack of an IR filter and that being dangerous.

The specs for what I want are:

- Low power. I would like to be able to sky-point with it for astronomy so the minimum power that can sky point is fine.
- As safe as possible, I would like to let kids and uneducated people point to stars with the laser and if someone accidentally flashes another guy I would like it to be safe.
- As cheap as possible as long as it is safe.

Thanks for your suggestions!
Luigi

Call up the guys at Atlasnova. They sell a greenie for that exact purpose you mention. I bought a red awhile ago from them -- quick shipping!

The Dealextreme 5mw laser should be fine. From what I have read, the Dealextreme lasers don't produce much IR radiation. They might have a bad/cheap IR filter, and the IR is not collimated like the green. It spreads out very quickly and should be harmless within a few inches for the 5mw version.

Or go for a better known company like Atlasnova, or similar.

From what I heard from this site and others sites, the DX 50mw and below have good IR filters in them, despite what the DX site saids. Many people have tested many DX 50mw and below and have reported that they do have good IR filters in them. Second, according to many sources I have read, the dangers of IR are overrated because IR comes out in an uncollimated, and unfocused flood. We are talking 10's of degrees divergence. Now if you put the Laser in your eyes, well thats a different story...

But then again, the choice is yours....

As laserbeam110 kindly pointed out, IR light really is overrated. If you are going to get a laser over 20mw with IR I would be more scared of the pure 20mw of green light bursting out of it then the IR light that comes out like a flashlight so its really not going to affect you as much as the green light.

Exactly, I am more concern with the pure green light coming out of the Laser than the IR. The real danger is when you point the laser in your eyes to see what it feels like :thumbsdow. The pure green is what you should be worrying ;).

I tested my glasses yesterday and they seem to block a 100% or UV from a 360nm UV LED. :)

I was just wondering what relevance your UV glasses have to do with this thread or a green laser??
Green lasers output IR, not UV.

Maybe he wanted to get that out of his chest :)

I was wondering the same thing. Norm, can you explain?

I see what you mean, not too sure what I was thinking. :(
