How about a 3D mag modified with a SSC led driven by either a flupic or Piglet board, long runtimes and bright output.

If the output of the 3 cell MagLED is enough for you, look for a regular 3C Maglight. The bulb swaps out easily and you can also use AA batteries with a sleeve and some tweaking of the tailcap spring.

Please note while an incan 4D is twice as bright as a 2D, a MagLED 3D/4D is only 10% brighter than the MagLED 2D

EDIT
Noticed a few people recommending assorted Surefires. Here is Tetragon's Surefire page:

One word... L4.. Or abbreviation. Just bring extra cells..

Not really the best for spot lighting though is it? I've never owned one, only seen beamshots.

How about the nuwai 800-3.It's a 3D size light with 3- 3watt leds. You can run 1 led or 2 leds or 3.with all 3 leds running it will run for 6hrs bright and a few more hrs dimming. With 1 led running mine ran for 29 hrs.You can change from 1 to 2 to 3 leds at the click of a switch.

Beware, Canadian Tire is way overpriced on their Magleds. Unless they're on sale, which is often, but they disappear very quickly when on sale. Hell they disappear quickly enough at their regular prices.

Try............

Anyone who thinks Maglights are top dog needs to reseach a bit more before laying down hard earned cash.

My new favorite camping light is the Streamlight 3C-XP. It's a polycarbonate, so it's liteweight and takes a beating; it uses 3 C batteries, which are available everywhere, and it has two stages of light... 3 leds for closeup work (plenty bright), with a runtime of 300 hours (advertised), and a xenon for throw (20,000 cp advertised), with a 5-6 hour runtime. Streamlight claims that it will run the leds for an hour after the xenon bulb has run out of juice. What I really like it that there are two different switches for the two modes, so no clicking combos until you find the one you want. It's the size you are looking for, and it's much lighter than a 3D maglight, and the polymer is much better to grip... especially when it's cold out. I paid about $30 for mine, and I love it.
