Hello all!

I have a question about the Surefire M951 Kit02.
I found a seller on Ebay with 28 brand new kits for $200 a piece. How do I tell if these are genuine or clones?
On the not so good pictures, I noted that the thumb screws are on the wrong side compared to other pics I've seen of the M9XX series, is that a sign of a clone? Here's one pic, with a link.

Thanks for an awesome forum!!

Welcome to CPF :welcome:

If you aren't willing to take the risk the best way to be sure is to purchase from a SureFire Dealer or from SureFire directly.

As to how much of a risk it appears to be?
I am concerned that the mount does appear to be 'attached' the wrong way round and this isn't possible as far as I'm aware (even with the latest slim MH90) Also the thumb screws seem 'different' to me.

Also, the FM4x BeamFilters are for 1.36" bezels not 1.47" bezels like the "M2" bezel used by the M95's LU60 which require the FM6x Series.

I suggest you call SureFire to check because it doesn't feel right.

Usually things that seem too good to be true turn out to be too good to be true.

Prices like that are easily found elsewhere and from reputable sources. I would stay away from that personally.

The body itself looks consistent with a recent production 951, but the mount is backwards. The thumbscrews should be on the top side in relation to the orientation of the light. The way the mount is designed, there is no way to put it on backwards.

As mentioned, the incorrect filter manual is shown. Also, the filters are a gray color. The one in the picture is black.

The tapeswitch looks a little odd. The one my friend has appears to be longer, but that could be thing with the picture.

The bezel and lamp housing appears to be too long for a 95x and too short for a 96x. Surefire could have made a design change, but it still doesn't look right.

The light may be genuine, but I wouldn't risk $200 on that.

Well, should've said that I've bought one already. The reason I asked was that I got worried that I was a bit too hasty doing so.:ohgeez:It looked good/safe considering he already sold 25+ stating them to be Surefire's, without getting negative feedback. Didn't look too much at the pics though(at first). When I do get it, how will I tell if it's genuine? I've got a C2 and a M972 to compare it to, but still, I'm no expert.

Thanks.

I'm home from work now and able to compare it to a wider range of photos.
The BeamFilter material appears to be more glossy and less well defined.
The current FM6x are black rather than grey.

If you know that your M972 is genuine then taking the two lights apart and comparing the individual components is what I'd suggest. Share photos if you're able.

It appears that the first listing in ebay also has the thumb screws on the wrong side.

I agree with you, if he has sold that many of them without negative feedback you're probably ok. Post some good close pictures of it when it arrives and we'll look at them for you.

Could it be some new ambidextrous thing?

The M972 I've got is kind of a LEGO project I have, but I'm quite sure it's genuine. It's a M972UUxx, a KT4 in front, a LU10, an old style MH90 and a UUxx Tape Switch. Not much to compare with, but that's why I wanted the M951, so I could "modernize" it a little.:D I'll try to take some decent pics when it arrives.

Thanks.

Commenting as an observer, this is why I frequent CPF quite a bit - the folks here are almost always helpful and polite, unlike many other forums on the Web.
:thanks:

Yup, I know, that's why I love it. Been sneaking around for too long, so I felt I had to join. :D

Got my package today. If this is a clone, then it's a damn good one! It looks, feels and even smells like a genuine Surefire. As I said, I'm no expert and the MH90 might prove me wrong here, but the reversed MH90 is the only thing that makes me wonder about this light. Well, I posted some half decent pics here:

Look at them and then please let me know what you think.

Thanks.

It sure looks like genuine Surefire parts in those pics.

Odd how the mount is reversed..

Thanks for the photos.
Please can you take some close up photos of the cable plug and socket?
(one connected, and some apart)

Added 3 new pics, let me know if you need more.

Is there any way it can be taken apart for inspection, without breaking it? Or does that color difference mean it's a fake?

If you can find another photo of an XM that has the same colour finish then perhap's it's a recent in-line change.
The XM I have and those I could see online have the same material (metal finish) for the plug and the socket.
I'm at my folks for the weekend so I've not been able to search as thoroughly as I'd like due to being busy in the real world.

Looking thru the 2008 Tactical Catalog (.pdf), they all look black. Can't be sure tho, since the photos aren't the best. Or is it just me, wanting to see that?

Also, looking at page 72 in the 2008 Illumination Tools Catalog, the same style filter is pictured. It seems the filter screens are interchangeable. Or maybe this is old news?

I've had a quick look at the catalog pdf but unless I've still got some in my car I'd prefer to wait 'til I get home and checking out the actual printed catalog before feeling more confident.

Here's my friend's XM tailcap if it helps. I don't have the pressure switch cable. His version is an older one that does not have the thinner body tube.
