I'll be going for a week long Hunting / Biking trip in Borneo. Saw a few threads on hunting lights, but I still can't decide if I should part with my hard earned cash for the SR90.

We will be traveling by 4X4 till the first shelter, unload and the rest will be by foot. Taking into consideration of roots and muddy terrain, I would need something that can handle the elements. For the past few trips, I was using Thrunite's Cat for its throwing abilities, however the run time is not long enough as we will be trekking for 3 to 5 hours.

Should I stick to the Cat and bring along spare cells, and risk fumbling with them in the middle of the jungle? We actually had a boar that nearly got away when the Cat went into pulses, that's when my buddy fired blindly.( Not recommended !!!)

The reason I'm choosing the SR90 over anything else, is the run time in low mode which is equivalent to my Cat in high. The only cons is the weight, size and $$$$.
Is there any other 2000+ lumens LED flashlight that can run for 6 hrs on low and still has a high mode if needed?

Thanks in advance.

Will you have somewhere to recharge the SR90 out on your trip?

As it uses it's own power pack, you can't really bring along a load of replacement cells with you.

Can you carry your rifle and gear plus that beast of a light and still point and shoot at the same time with that? Unless your gun is a Browning M2 .50 on a tripod, I don't see the practicality in hunting with a SR90. Why don't you get something you can actually mount on your rifle? Or NVG?

Cheers.

I do alot of hunting at night, including boar and I have never had to run a light for more than 2 total hours in one night(and Ive been out all night). So I think the battery pack for the SR90 will do you just fine.

I think the SR90 is prolly a great choice. It is kinda large...but I cant see you shooting and spotting at the same time with any light that is bright enough to meet your needs.

Also I recommend bringing multiple lights if your worried there might be an issue with the battery or maybe a malfunction. I usually carry my edc light, my TLR-2(which is either on my pistol or rifle), and whichever large bright thrower I have at the time.(at the moment I DONT have one!:sigh:)

Personally given the cost of the SR90 and other considerations, I would bring the cat and a few extra cells and my edc light to assist the battery change. If you change the cells halfway thru your trek, then you know you wont have another pulse issue like last time!

Heres my latest boar kill. I used a million candle power spotlight and a .308. 250 yards dead sprint! No bragging here...it was a one in a million shot!

It's probably just me, but I would not want to go anywhere on foot while lugging around a massive Olight SR90 along. That thing looks just *way* too bulky.

Wow.. Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, I don't hunt alone. I usually go with my buddy and a local guide. We take turns being the torch bearer. I will have my Quark Turbo and Mini as back up. I'll be testing the SR90 tomorrow. :grin2: We'll see.

Ok. I bit the bullet. I'm still intimidated by the intimidator. :lolsign:

The cat looks small next to it.

i've got both...take the Cat and extra cells. i can't imagine trekking that terrain for that long lugging around the SR90 and all that other gear.

2nd, how much throw do you actually need in the rainforest? i have a woods behind my house, certainly not as dense as a rainforest, but when i go back there w/ the SR90 i can't use the high mode because i blind myself w/ the glare...and i still haven't had a chance to use it after the leaves have start growing back. as much as i love my SR90 i just can't imagine it being anything more than an expensive liability in that environment.

I'm not sure how much throw I need, but I'm sure that I need a bigger and brighter hot spot as compared to the Cat. Sometimes we look for targets high up in the canopy. (70m to 90m above the forest floor ). I'll update after my trip. :grin2:

Please do! This is a very interesting thread and i would dearly love to see some beamshots if you don't mind bringing a camera with you. Real world use of the lights with pictures are great!

Yes..yes! Pictures and stories of your trip when you get back please! As great as it is having all these crazy lights, I have never really used any of mine properly. It would be great to see how it faired out in the jungle.

ha!!! Scuderia, sounds like your mind is already made up!!!! Yes we want SR90 action pics also!!!!!!!!!!

I think a head lamp would also be useful as another back up and great for making a camp fire at night, you got both hands free for gathering and making your fire.

+1 headlamp.
But if you really want the range, what of taking a properly bright headlamp (like AHorton's creation, or a sten-light). Even a DIY custom sticking an sst-50 on a britelumens heatsink into a D M@g head, running the battery cable down to a pack at your waist.
I can't see carrying such a big light being the best use of my hands, so I'd be deep into a +1000 lumen headlamp right quick.

**Or take the head off your thrunight catapult and solder on a cable to the +'ve and -'ve contacts. Rig a head/helmet mount for the now de-capatated thrunight catapult light-head. Run the cable down to your waiste, DIY a connection to the headless battery-tube, you can still maintain functionality of the switch at the bottom.

I've tried trekking in the woods behind my house with the SR90, not too cumbersome IMHO. I'll be using the Quark Turbo with a Nite Ize Stretch Holster for those hands free moments.
