Solarforce are now manufacturing sst50 LEDs for Surefire 6p/Solarforce L2 type lights. I'm considering getting one of these but have a few questions. Firstly will there be overheat issues if used with 6p type lights and as throw is important are the SST50's likely to equal the R2 emitters in that respect. Cost is $48. Thanks. Jim

Re: SST50 LED Questions

Yes there will be a overheating issue, depends how hard the led id driven.

The drop-in and body contact can be an issue for heat transfer.

The R2 has a narrow beam angle, it should throw futher.

Re: SST50 LED Questions

I don't know about the heat but the throw of SST-50 is considerably less than what R-2 could do. Nevertheless SST-50 is still very bright...

Re: SST50 LED Questions

Throw will be less with the SST-50 than with the R2-XRE, however overall output and spill will most likely be quite a lot higher.
As to overheating, this depends largely on the drive-level and the heat-sinking.

If the drive-level is conservative and the heat-sinking good (large heatsink made of brass, aluminium or even better copper), then over-heating should not be too much of a problem.

Some people have wrapped copper tape around the reflector of the drop-in so that it contacts the metal of the head. This should also help dissipate the heat more effectively.
