Surefire U2?

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

The U2's I've seen have been pretty much the same as the L5 beam at highest setting. There are reviews with beamshots by CPF Members here that are worth checking out.

Size15s, is the 100 lumen rated output of the U2 a typo? The L5 is rated at 65 and with Surefire's history of conservative ratings, I would expect the U2 to be noticeably brighter.

It is possible that SureFire wanted to collect more data on their products in production so that they could give a better realistic production rating and to begin with were conservative?

There are a number of factors involved I'm sure.

I do not think that the 100 Lumen rating for the U2 is a typo.

Thanks Al, we all anxiously await

The U2 is going to be a killer light. After playing with it at a local show I was truly impressed.

Yes waiting seems to be our favourite pastime.
Please please oh mighty flashlight God - let that U2 run in regulation on Pilas :begging:

JanCPF>PK placed a 168a out of my bag in the U2 he was carrying. He specifically asked for an "a" rather than an "s". It worked.

drool ...
this is one of the most anticipated lights this year for me ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
SF ... hurry up, I am waiting for too long now!

Sean, I'd like to take your word for it, but do you have any hard confirmation from Surefire to back your statement?

I do- I contacted Surefire customer service through email and via telephone and they confirmed that the LEDs are covered under their "if it breaks, we'll fix it" warranty.

While talking with PK at Shotshow he mentioned that the unit he was carrying “somehow” was bored out a bit more than the production units would be. He said this in a joking manner like he had it done for his unit only so I don't think the production units will take the A's.

That bezel sure looks like it would accomodate a Pelican-style reflector...

I wouldn't count out the U2 in the throw department just yet.

Looking at McGizmo's photo (which is the best pic of the U2 available so far; the 2004 SF catalogue pic is not the best), it looks like the head unscrews either above or below the dimmer collar. Is it a 'smart' or 'dumb' head?

carl,

Please can you post a link to McGizmo's photo and post the page of the 2004 Catalog with the photo you are comparing it to.

The U2's bezel contains all the smart magic and can be use on many WeaponLights (such as this MH90 Millennium Universal WeaponLight Housing)

The U2 will be sealed - only two threads will be able to be unscrewed - bezel-to-body and body-to-TailCap.

Remember that at this stage many of the U2's a still proto-types that may well unscrew at threads they won't in production.

Thanks

That's the same type of U2 proto-type as the one I photographed on the MH90

The U2 photo on page 33 in the 2004 Catalog taken by Ichiro Nagata is an older proto-type than the U2 photo on page 35 taken by Shelby Chan which in turn is older than the proto-type on show at the SHOT Show 2004 (photographed by Don as seen above). The styling is different behind the ring, and the ring itself has increased grip styling. I guess this could be due to decision to make the bezel a "Lamp Module" for WeaponLights.

Al,
Thanks for posting the pics. I can't post the catalogue pics with my computer unfortunately. As for the U2 bezel being compatible with other weapon lights housings, I wonder why the M2 housing wasn't used for the U2 like they did with the L5. Also, I would assume the E2C can be used with an E2 body. Using McGizmo's upcoming 2-stage tailcap to that combo might be interesting.

another pic

Here's another pic (taken at the SureFire booth at IWA Shot Show in Germany 03.12.04)
