If you live by a Meijer, the Dorcy 220 lumen is a very nice thrower. It is a rechargeable light but can also be run on 123 primarys and a spacer. There is a very good and loooong thread about this light.

Make good love to your wife this weekend and hopping that she will give you extra $10. By then you should have a total of $40, use that money to purchase RQ clone spear from kaidomain. This baby is sexy and throw well. Will throw as far as DBS if you can mod it to 1.4A driver.:hitit::D

The Smartfire V-68C is a pretty good deal at $27 or $24, and throws well even with its OP reflector. There are plenty of throwers with SMO reflectors available on DX, but I can't speak for their quality.

It depends.. do you want the light to throw, or do you want to throw the light? :nana:

Check out the R-2 flashlights , Solarforce - Ultrafire / etc $30 and under .
How much throw do you want ?

DX has drop in , sku.21037 $24 - 400Lumen claimed / 3 Mode .

For 40 you can get an eagletac P100A2 which will be much higher quality than any DX lights. It isn't realyl a thrower, but it seems to be a good all around light. It runs on 2 AA batteries.

The Dorcy is $50 but it does have a lot of throw. The most of the three I mention here.

I wonder if you could mod a Task Force 2C Cree from Lowes....

This has decent throw, a nice beam and is more compact than the Home Depot 4W. Plus it is $30 or less.

How bout the Husky (Home Depot) 2 D 4 watt.? Under $30.

This one has better throw than the Task Force but less than the Dorcy and the beam is not as nice, IMHO. It does have more runtime I believe. Mine was $25.

Edit:
Oops, sorry I didn't read your comment on 18650's.

My Romisen RC-F4 Q5 from shiningbeam.com has some nice throw to it and was only around $23 iirc. Right now it is, by far, the brightest and throwiest light I own. It runs off 2xCR123 btw.

thanks for all the suggestions, guys. i'm wondering if the rc-f4 can be modded to accept an 18650 cell? just a little sandpaper on a spindle in my drill?

also, i guess i should have been a little more specific, i'd like my thrower to be somewhat pocketable. any thoughts about the ultrafire c1 from dx? comes with a claimed 230 lumen q5 wc, and looks easily up-gradeable.

That's a cool looking drop-in and I have one on the way but I'd be shocked if it has even average throw. It's an MC-E in a small reflector so it should be very floody. My P7 lights with reflectors that are much bigger and deeper only have decent throw.

I second the Romisen RC-F4, I run 2 Ultrafire RCR123A 3.7V batteries in mine and its very bright for the money, the Romisen RC-N3 is also another great light for the doe, it can run on 1 CR123 or 2 AA batteries, it also has a nice clip and I use mine with 1 RCR123A battery and clip it to my hat, awesome hat light and it doesnt weight much with the 123 battery, buy both lol, you wont be disappointed. BTW Shinningbeam has great service and their shipping is quick.

i have an rc-n3 that i got from shiningbeam a few weeks ago, and i am amazed at how good it is for ~$25. i've been using it as my edc with an rcr123. i also agree that he offers great service and shipping is fast. that's why i've been looking at the rc-f4, but i've got a couple of 18650 batts lying around, un-used since my dx cheapie died on me, so i'm trying to find a use for them.
