So my brother-in-law from Norway wanted a really, really bright dive light for Christmas and knowing that it's my 'hobby' and having seen some other lights I made he asked me to build one for him.

I already had some 3 x SSC P4 dive lights http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=176788 but they where not enough for him, he wanted it brighter, much brighter so that he can compete with his friend's high power HID's. But it still had to have a good runtime, be regulated, have each LED light up independently, easy to use and safe ( no explosions ). So after some thinking and calculations i decided to modify one into 3 x MC-E.

The main problem was the space in the existing body, I none the less managed to fit the following:

3 x Cree MC-E M bin W tint stars ( with individual die access ) wired in series from Cutter
3 x RCD-24 700mA CC Drivers from Cutter
3 x Boom SS Reflectors from Cutter
1 x Custom HS
1 x Custom built batt pack consisting of 5 x protected Tenergy 2600mAh 18650's wired in series and with balancing taps
2 x Heavy duty 140W reed switches.
Lots of epoxy and Glow powder
A LOT OF WIRES AND PLUGS

The charger is an Imax B5 balancing charger ( obviously that did not fit inside the light:)

The wiring, and where to put it was a big pain, especially when wiring the MC-E's in series, I had to grind off the legs of the reflectors since they happen to fall right on the soldering pads of the star.
Luckily the boom optics are shorter than the original optics which gave me some room for the electronics but that meant that i had to machine a new heat sink in order to lift things up and house the electronics, this also gave the added bonus of a larger thermal contact to the body and a much thicker HS. The original reed switches could not handle the wattage and got stuck in the on position so they had to be replaced with larger ones which i luckily found locally (although they are now too large).

After a long and tedious build i ended up with the same looking light as i started with, having the same individually magnetically switchable led's as the original, but it is now regulated and about 4 times as bright  you cannot imagine the smile on my face when i first turned it on.

The runtime with all 3 led's turned on is shorter than the original but still well over an hour which is generally enough for night dives.
The beam is wider than the original but much brighter in every way. The hotspot is much bigger whilst still being brighter, the spill is wider but way brighter.
I was quite impressed by the amount of light this thing puts out, way brighter than anything i have ever seen ( of comparable size )
It starts getting slightly warm after about 5 mins of full power use.

Now for some Pictures:

Unfortunately i did not have time for some proper beam shots as it was on it's way to Norway in my sister's luggage as soon as i finished it.

My happiness was short lived since when my sister arrived home she found that it was no longer in her luggage but was replaced by a piece of paper saying it was held for security reasons in Munich :hairpull:
She is still fighting to get it back and i feel like i have lost a son :mecry:
Lets hope for the best.

Great mod you did! That's an awesome host to start with, it holds alot of 1850's. What a shame it's been held for security reasons, hope the light reaches its destination soon!

"Security reasons" huh, looks like your new son was adopted in Munich:shakehead Maybe carry-on would have been a better option.

Thanks i'm a proud father :)

apparently it's the batteries they are scared of, you are supposed to disconnect/remove the batteries from anything before putting them in luggage.
I dont blame them for being suspicious, I can imagine what this thing would look like under X-rays.
My sister had 3 flights to catch and had she had it in her hand luggage it would probably arouse more suspicion 3 times over and end up being confiscated anyway.
But the most infuriating thing is that my sister was in Munich airport for 3 hours waiting for her connecting flight. The least they could have done was to call her and ask her to open the luggage herself and let them inspect and not just go ahead and confiscate it.

When she first asked them how she is going to get it back they told her to go back to Munich for it, they must be crazy!! then after talking to a hundred different people they said that they will send it back to her via courier, and guess what...she has to pay for the shipping, not to mention that when she receives it she will now probably have to pay the import tax for it, what's more is that the airline cannot be held liable for any of these expenses or if it is lost.

My son was "adopted" by Airline MAFIA !!!

:wtf:

I can only imagine that feeling you have in the bottom of your stomach whenever you think about it. That is a nice looking light.

Thanks Phantom, i hope ill be able to see it again in one piece and that it's put to good use, if otherwise ill build another one, i still have a few bodies left.

Yep, a lot of salt too.

I might be interested in a 3 x P7...

P.s I am coming to Malta on 2nd Feb to St.Paul's bay for a week's diving.
If you want to tag along for a dive i could bring my 7 Cree out, it's not been wet yet...

It wont work with a 3xP7 mainly due to the size of the actual leds and the required reflectors (hard to find small reflectors that do not produce a donut hole) but also because the driving electronics will be more complicated since all the dies are wired in paralell. i specifically wanted to use the MC-E leds due to the size, availability of small reflectors which do not produce a donut hole and simpler buck drivers. on the other hand battery configuration would be easier possibly safer and cheaper with P7 leds if they where to be direct driven with a simple resistor to limit the current . the li-ions would simply be wired in paralell without the need for balance charging.
i would be interested to give it a try if you are interested and we can find reflectors or optics that will fit.
It would be great to meet a fellow flashaholic in Malta as our breed is very scarce here (im possibly the only one) a dive would be nice too even though i havent gotten wet for a long time, thanks for the invite.

I have also been wondering.......In the states I would have issued an "amber alert" long ago! (Thats a roadside alert for lost children):(

Finally my sister received it in Norway this week and it seems in good condition. She did have to pay about $45 for shipping and another $90 for local import taxes, not to mention all the overseas phone calls.
At least it seems that it has not been used as the batt voltage indicates that they are still very fresh.
I hope my brother in law puts in good use now that it finally arrived ( two months late )

Great to hear it finally arrived! I am sure he will appreciate it once he dives with it. Thanks for the news!

For a giggle, think of when they turned it on and pointed it in their eyes, as you know they did!!!!!! And if they did keep it, how would they recharge it? I imagine their stupidity making it explode if they tried. So, the problem is people, not flashlight batteries....
Russ

Glad you got it back though......

Any chance he'll send you some pics? If it looks that great just sitting there, imagine underwater.

I would like to do the same mod Amonra.
Can you give a little more details of driver placement, heatsink thickness etc.

Any info would be appriciated.

Cheers
Pelks
