..and being fairly new to this stuff myself, I don't have much in-depth info for him.

Anyway, he's planning to go on a mission trip to Honduras several months from now. I've mentioned that he'll probably need a good light. I sent him the "flashlight reviews" write up of the Fenix L1D and L2D (1 or 2 AA, multimode cree lights). If I had to choose something right now, that's the one I would get (the 2-cell version).

I showed him the little no-name single led light I had with me. Tomorrow I'll take in my Minimag led for demo purposes.

By the way: Any problems ordering from the Fenix-Store or Lighthound?

From what I've heard, they both have very good service.

Also, don't forget the 8% off coupon when ordering from Fenix Store, "CPF8".

The L2D should make a great light. Well priced, good performance and easy to find batteries(tell him to use good rechargeable batteries, he'll get better runtime that way).

The 2AA MinimagLED's output is similar to the L2D-CE's medium and lower then the Q5 version's medium.

Fenixstore is great for light purchases; I buy batteries from Battery Station or Surefire.

Your co-worker might also want to get something like the Fenix E0 or an Arc AAA, nice little pocket lights for those times when just a bit of light is needed for getting around. They will probably see more use then the bigger brighter ones and be much more convenient to carry. They're better for reading, too.

Have you read up any reviews on the Surefire G2/G2LED? It's almost indestructible and would serve its purpose very well.

The Fenix L1D was a good choice. In the Q5 version it will probably be bright enough for anything within reason, small enough for a pants pocket, and it uses AA batteries which are usually available about any where. The L2D which is brighter and has a longer run time is also considerably longer. If he plans on carry this light while running around it may be a tad too long.

lighthound and fenix-store are both awesome, with lighthound being my personal favorite of the two. you will definitely become a repeat buyer. from either! :)

There's a 2% CPF discount at Lighthound for using the code "CPF".

Can't go wrong dealing with either of those vendors.

I can also recommend Bright Guy, and Battery Junction, too.

:twothumbs

So many great places to spend yer' money, eh ?

Well, the co-worker was a no show today. I was gonna show him the Minimag; but anyway, I was glad I had it because we had a tornado drill, which involved us going down to the basement offices. No, the lights didn't go off, but I felt better knowing I had the Minimag with me, especially after reading about how many times people have seen those "emergency" wall lights fail!

Guess I'll have to carry it in again tomorrow. If this keeps up it's going to lead to me EDC'ing that Minimag! :D

(it's a bit long for a pocket, but still manageable)

Minimags are good and such, but I prefer alternatives with more power/reliability.
You need you a Surefire L1 with the Crees.

Why not point him to CountyCom and point out the neat little $1.50 LED clipons. If I was going on a trip like that I think I'd throw in a fistful just on general principles. If nothing else, they would make some great presents once down there. [The Pentagonlight MOLLE is another good light I would probably take along]

Hah, I can't afford a Surefire, I'm poor!! (just got out of school recently)

My buddy's got a wife and kids so he doesn't have a lot of extra money to throw around either...

The Surefire G2 retails for $36. You could buy that and get a cheap DX CREE drop-in for $10 and have a wonderful set-up for less than $50. Not to mention the durability of the Nitrolon body.

And I should think getting AA batteries would be one heck of a lot easier than 123s!!!

Edit: Hey stress! Send me a PM and I'll "pay it forward"
I have an AA light and an AAA light I'll send you.
