Ok, other than the 5/8/14 led drop in clusters that are, IMO, a bit overpriced, what would be a cheaper and perhaps even brighter upgrade that could be done to the "low" side of the DUO? It has a screw based bulb now, and runs on 6 volts. Nothing fancy, I don't do boards (yet).
I just bought one from an ebayer and I think it has the original incandescent pilot lamp.

instead of putting any more money into,
get a Streamlight Argo HP (mod it with a Seoul Star and suitable focusing device) and put an 17650 Li-Ion cell into (or mod it with an 18650)
or, if You like that size of the Petzl,
get a Princeton Tech Apex (and do the "emitter swap").

TerraLux makes a screw-in replacement found here==> http://www.led-replacement.com/tle-1s.html

however, i don't believe that the LOW side of the Duo is screw-in. it's a low-output bi-pin bulb, IIRC. you want to change the LOW side right? the High side is a screw-base Halogen bulb which will be brighter (with shorter run time) than the TerraLux TLE-1S.

BTW, i have put the TLE-1S into an old Petzl Zoom. Work pretty well with a long burn time, but not too bright.

Very sad indeed. The DUO used to be my favourite light for many years. But everything has to give way sooner or later. It is now in happy retirement inside the drawer (alongside many workhorse lights of yesteryears)! I would welcome suggestions as to their future.
