Folks,
I have a half a dozen NIB ups batteries (lead-acid gel) that I would like to use for some random lights and maybe to run a portable livewell, can I charge these things with my little 12v trickle charger?

sure, I do it all the time. I prefer to use a trickle charger for things rather than dumb plugin wallwarts which at times if you forget about them can overcharge a little I think.

Some trickle chargers are not smart and can stil cook an SLA (sealed lead acid battery) over time.

The better ones are specifically made for SLA's and are also temperature compensated.

13.8V is the float voltage for SLA's at I think 25 deg C ('room temp')
