Curious... is there any way to filter a blue/purple tinted HID to get UV out the front?

Do HIDs have any output in the UV spectrum?
Would it be enough OTF to surpass a UV tinted cree XRE?

thanks

Lots of UV if you remove the outer glass envelope of UV stop Quartz. I have some special UV output HID bulbs (mostly UV-A). These bulbs have no outer glass tube, just the arc chamber portion. There is a photo of one on our website.
try this link: http://www.xevision.com/hid_options.html#bulbs

Scroll down till you see the D1S looking bulb (metal base box) that says UVA on it.

Can you damage your eyesight from something this bright in the UV spectrum?

Use this information at your own risk, I accept NO responsibility or liability for its accuracy. Do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

I am not an expert in UV, but I am sure you would not want to stare at it. This is the UV that is used to tan skin, I am sure it is NOT good for your eyes for anything but momentarily.

You certainly can. The UV component of the spectrum is there before you filter out the visible component, but it's the dazzling visible light that makes you look away before you risk damage by staring at it.

If the visible component of the spectrum has been largely or even completely filtered out, the light emitted won't appear as bright. But the UV part of the spectrum, which is the really damaging part, IS still present. There will be no bright light to make you instinctively look away. It's for that reason it can be so damaging - with nothing to warn you it is dangerous, your eyes will be affected before you realise it.

Think of it like radiation that you cannot see. :caution:

Interesting... thanks gents.
This project sounds more dangerous than I think its worth. Maybe something for me to try in the future.
