Anyone know anyting about this Waterproof "Extreme Green Laser Shark Deterrent"?

Don't really care about all that shark deterrent stuff. Just seemed like an interesting item (<5mw greenie that's waterproof to 300 feet).

Here's the spec's:

Anyone here ever seen one of these, or know anything about it (who makes it; what's the quality like)? I'm tempted to order one but that product description reads like all those over-the-top ebay adds for the crappy stuff.

When you see stuff like,

"We have set the power level just below the point where you would need a special license to purchase and use it."

followed by,

"We have been gradually reducing the power to find that point where it will chase sharks but not be strong enough to hurt them."

you really have to wonder about the integrity of the seller. Still, the spec's look interesting, so I thought I'd see if anyone here has any more info on it.

in their description... $120, :duck: I would think you could make something cheaper that that. Take apart a waterproof flashlite, :eek: calm down, nothing TOO speacial, and take apart a pointer, and swap parts. they can't be THAT different inside...
 
A flashlight that is waterproof to 300ft AND is of substantial quality isn't trivial either :D
 
I'd rather use a bang stick instead of a laser. But if I had to use a laser. It wouldn't be a class IIIA. Here's a link to what a bangstick is. If you are a PETA person. Don't look.

As I said in my first post:

I wasn't interested in it for that reason. It just seemed like a nice piece. Should be more durable than the typical "pen" style laser.

As for sharks; we have an understanding. They don't mess with me, and I won't blow a gaping hole in them with my .44 Magnum bangstick (yes, I already have one).

I wonder, for science sake, how far underwater a 44 mag bullet would travel when fired underwater. Assuming all the bullets were waterproof ect... :oops: I just saw the bangstick... Nevermind... :ohgeez:
 
Yea, the "Bangstick" is a point-blank weapon. Short barrel; long stick; contact detonation. You can use it as a "shark billy" with the safety on and just try and push them away or bop 'em in the nose to chase them off. But if one gets too aggressive you pull the pin and thrust it or shoot it at 'em (like a spear) and [BOOM]! Then you run like hell because the bloody mess you just made will attract a lot more.

Really a last ditch weapon. You don't use it if you can avoid it. When you are trying not to get eaten it's best to keep a low profile and not fill the water with chum.

That, and it's really unpleasant. The shockwave from the 44 Mag feels like a kick in the chest. The one in that picture looks kind of whimpy. Probably a lower caliber model.

Actually, it would be interesting if a laser would really chase away a shark, but it would be very difficult to get a significant hit on the eye of a fast moving shark. Or even a slow moving one, considering you will be moving too. And then there's all the particulate matter in the water, and refractive variances over distance (due to salinity and temperature differences). I wonder how collimated a laser will stay under water, and how far it can carry any significant power without it all being reflected or refracted away?

Personally, I don't want to be the beta tester, so I'll hang on to my bangstick. Still, a waterproof laser could be fun for other reasons.
 
Bullets break up quickly in the water. That's why the bangstick is a point black weapon.
 
this item is stupid, you'd have to be eagle eye to aim a tiny beam to a sharks eye thats over 100 feet away in dark murky water

huh???? a bullet can barely get through the water withthe 100% drag, less shred into pieces LOL!!!
Sorry had to add this, i might not know lasers but i know physics with firearms.
A bangstick is point blank because a bullet will NOT TRAVEL through water, at least not with enough velocity to break the skin.
In fact, if you were to fire a rifled weapon, say a .38 (9mm) with even a 3" barrel, the pressure it takes to squeeze through the rifling against the drag and pressure of water would cause the bullet to be lodged.
OK this is off topic of lasers but i cant stand when people talk out their arse.:xyxgun:

Actually if you watch mythbusters they said that if a bullet is fired into the water, it would be leathal for 3 feet into the water before it shattered. Also if you fire under water it will peirce human skin for at least a couple feet after it leaves the barrel.
 
Alright this is something I have tried personally (bullets under water). Ive got a few years of weapons training under my belt and Ive fired basically anything you can think of. Contrary to popular belief, its actually the lower velocity bullets that are able to travel under water the farthest. 9mm bullets can be lethal to about six feet under water. But as soon as the bullets go supersonic, the minute they hit the water, the resistance literally tears the bullet apart. The most lethal gun under water is any type of shotgun shell or slug, simply because of the velocity and weight.

:ohgeez: there we go again...shattered. have you even shot a pellet gun into a phone book? it might crumple a bit but to actually fragment (shatter as you refer), lead need to hit a metal target such as "tyrone" which is my 3/8" steel friend that is a head/torso on a welded tripod, or a hard,non mallable surface such as a rock. I oil him up and where you hit leaves a dry mark and lead dust on the ground. The coppercoated metal jacket adds no difference to this arguement.
If you shoot above the ground, the bullet, yes, will have some velocity as long as there is air behind it and will quicky lose velocity.

lethal means it will kill, not the distance traveled by the way

ATTENTION: Do not take everyones word on these forums. Anyone can write in here.They can even lie about their age, they can claim to have "special weapons training" or even their career status. If you do half believe then look at the public profile. Do you think a laser loving professor is going to be into "Special weapons training"? Especially when they dont mention hunting or guns as hobbies?

A pistol or rifle will not fire underwater safely. PERIOD!
If you were lucky it will lodge in the barrel and knock out of your hand.
This is the same reason you dont shoot a gun that has got plugged up with dirt if you drop it.
The bullet fires by combustion and gas propells it.
Water is a mass not a surrounding gas.
its not too hard to figure out that only so much gas can be made inside that bullet with a spark and powder.
If it doesnt manage to blow up in your hand, it will lodge in the barrel.
The riflling is actually a smaller diameter than the bullet so it squeezes into where it leaves like a football. you can check this by holding a unused bullet to the end of the barrel..see..it wont fit.
Now imagine how much pressure it takes to squeeze that sucker all the way through that barrel..alot of gas huh?

As fas as a bang stick it is basically an explosive on the end of a stick with a slug or something. I am not a diver .I just know that this is why they are pointblank. Again water is mass,but at point blank there is no travel and this does not have a barrel to travel through.

I dont know anything about lasers than what I have read. I am comfortable with that. It too bad that somepeople have to tell stories to feel adaquate or special, especially if someone was to actually believe them.

In general, the second statement is correct, but it is NOT an absolute "PERIOD!"

Here's one example:


The Glock 17 may be equipped with an optional set of maritime spring cups for use in water environments. Maritime spring cups are not intended for submerged firing, but for surface use by special ops teams who operate in and around water. The maritime spring cups are two small parts within the firing pin assembly and are not included on any Model 17 sold by Glock (civilians can only get them through 3rd parties). They insure that water can pass by the firing pin within the firing pin channel, thus preventing the creation of hydraulic force within the firing pin channel -- which would slow the firing pin down, causing light primer strikes. With the special cups, the action will cycle reliably while submersed, if a little bit slower. NATO specification ammunition (such as Winchester's Ranger RA9124N) with waterproof sealed primers and case mouths is recommended.

Although you may install the maritime spring cups on any Glock model, *only* the Glock 17 was designed and intended to use the modified spring cups for aquatic firing -- and only then using 9mm ball ammunition to remain within acceptable pressure limits. The foolhardy who insist on living dangerously must keep several things in mind: The Glock 17 must be fully submersed underwater. There must not be any air left within the pistol as the muzzle is pointed towards the surface of the water after submersion to allow the air in the barrel to escape. Use only full metal jacket, ball-type ammunition because the water within the barrel can spread a hollow point out within the barrel upon firing. This increases the bearing surface of the bullet to the barrel and could catastrophically increase pressures. Even if the barrel doesn't burst, the expanded bullet would get even bigger upon exiting into the water and would slow down very quickly while tumbling. Accuracy would be terrible.

The marinized Glock 17 is primarily for use by various Special Warfare units operating in aquatic environments. At least one specialized Scuba diving group regularly uses G17's to dispatch sharks where they dive. The Glock 17 using NATO specification ball ammunition will completely penetrate a minimum of one 1/2" pine board at a distance of ten feet from the muzzle when fired underwater.

Trained personnel who use Glocks underwater know they must obey several rules:
1) use only a Glock Model 17 with amphibious spring cups (reliability issue);
2) use only 9mm FMJ subsonic, sealed primer ammo;
3) completely immerse the pistol and get *all* the air out of the barrel;
4) wear protective ear plugs, gloves, wet suit, face mask, etc.;
5) do not fire near solid objects or in enclosed spaces to prevent return
concussion.

SAFETY is key, as I believe livetoall is trying to point out. There are special requirements and knowledge needed to shoot underwater. Just as when you scuba, if you break rules, you are risking your life.

Actually, a bangstick does have a short barrel, and the water in the barrel becomes part of the destructive force. High velocity projectiles do 2 kinds of damage. Direct mechanical damage from physical contact with the projectile, and shock damage from the shockwave created by the impact. When a bullet strikes a soft, liquid-filled target (like most animals) the hydrolic shockwave can cause far more damage than the actual projectile (the higher the velocity, the greater the shock damage).

A bangstick is fired by thrusting it into the target. The barrel is pressed against the target and is driven backwards in its sleeve until the loaded round contacts a firing pin at the rear of the barrel chamber. The thrust has to be hard enough to ovecome the friction of the barrel and drive it back with sufficient force to detonate the primer. This requires a fair amount of pressure, and as a result forms a tight seal between the barrel and the target.

When the round is fired the water trapped in the barrel has no place to go and becomes part of the projectile adding a large amount of hydrolic shock damage to the destructive force. If you fire a bangstick into a target above water you get a bullet hole. Under water you get a massive crater.

Edit: I suppose I should add that it is actually dangerous to fire a bangstick above water. Well, it's actually dagerous any time, but there are additional problems above water, so don't try this at home kiddies.

Okay, one more edit: An interesting thing about bangsticks is that since the shock damage is actually far greater than the mechanical/projectile damage, a bangstick is just as effective with a BLANK round (some say even more effective). One of the most destructive bangsticks ever invented was developed by the Navy, and used a cartridge with no projectile. It could litterally cut a shark in half!

And what does this have to do with the topic of waterproof lasers? Nothing, actually. But it's my thread so I can jack it if I want to. :P

A speargun will work in water. But lets try this again a bullet had to pass through rifling which is powered by what? A small area with powder which when ignited creates a gas which to have this ingition you need what? OXYGEN!!! YOU are being just like the person I am trying to protect here THAT WILL BELEIVE ANYTHING THEY READ ON THE INTERNET! CONGRADULATIONS! They use some actual facts combines with alotta crap unless those are some special propellers they have on them rounds. With todays technology I guess someone could believe the government has a phaser just like STAR TREK! I need to start studying these lasers more so i can see how many believers i could make on that!

OK IG, now i am not going to bash you, just want to tell what your describing is not a barrel, its more like an extended reciever.. is driven backwards in its sleeve until the loaded round contacts a firing pin at the rear of the barrel chamber.....areciever is where all the action happens or as with a revolver, a cylinder. A barrel is a fixed..well..barrel that the projectile travels through. this was your thread, sorry it had to go here in the first place. I only had respond to this after that last guys reply. In one sense its a barrel in another its not. One thing for sure is..If a gun underwater worked, spearguns would be a thing of the past. (Equal pressure,uses draw/spring force )

Have you ever ignited explosives underwater? Obviously not. I have. I don't know how the chemical reaction occurs, but I do know it goes BOOM!
