What are some other words which are commonly mispronounced?

I've been thinking of posting this for a while and I notice that a lot of CPF'ers are calling the Ra lights R.A. instead.

Ra is the short name for the Egyptian sun god, who blessed Henry with the gift of being able to contain the light of the sun within a small handheld vial but since it was actually Henry who put in all the hard work of presenting them to the public most people never realized the connection with the sun god, and since Ra is no longer an every day deity, people forgot who he was, and simply started referring to him as R.A.

From my understanding HA or Type III anodizing are the samething

So by using HA III we are actually saying Hard Anodizing Hard Anodizing

I don't think it matters anymore since Henry has decided to switch the name to HDS instead. It does however bug me that people are still referring to it as Ra clicky/twisty instead of HDS clicky/twisty. We who know have no problems with the name but the newbies would be confused thinking that they are two different lights.

I once noticed someone commented that he went to HDS' website and couldn't find any Ra lights.

To be honest, I was one of them. For many years I had lived with the misconception that they are called HAII and HAIII. It was only a few months back that I realized that only type III are called hard anodized or mil-spec hard anodized.

Slightly left of centre off topic but there are LOTS of people from the USA here, and I would bet that Most of them pronounce "Aussie" (when referring to us Australians) as "Ossy"

My biggest bugbear is more of a common spelling problem, exacerbated by chronic laziness when pronouncing:

"Your a legend!" <------ WRONG!

"You're a legend!" <-- CORRECT!

Fenix. I think a lot of people pronounce the name with a short 'e' sound as in 'hen', (I did), but the correct was is with a long 'e' as in 'he' like the mythical firebird 'phoenix'.

I'm moving it to the Café, but I don't hold out too much hope for its longevity if it is used as a vehicle for thinly-veiled sneering at other members.

I'm sure we are familiar with English UK vs. English US words such as:-

Trousers vs. Pants (always gets a giggle from those under 10)

Pavement vs. Sidewalk

Lift vs. Elevator

Torch vs. Flashlight

but that isn't about mispronunciation as such.

I can only think of one torch-related word that is pronounced differently on either side of the pond - aluminium.

I only have one that bugs me, and is rampantly misused here on CPF:

loose vs. lose

As in: "You loose the game" rather than the correct "You lose the game." Do a search for "loose" here on CPF, and you will find in most cases it should have been "lose."

The difference between having some loose pocket change, and being a loser is profound. I'm fighting a losing battle with the incorrect, loose interpretation of which spelling should be used.

One that seems to appear often on CPF and always puzzles me is where people write "shinny" instead of "shiny". Shinny would rhyme with "tinny", rather than "tiny".
