It depends on what is bright? A normal keychain light with those round and flat batteries can be bright too and super small. But for me it must be over 150 Lumen for sure and that Eiger thing is not so small in my mind because the Batteries ist uses are pretty long. AA and AAA Batteries are too long, i think a light with CR2 batterie would be the best like the Mini CR2 4 sevens or the Lummi lights.

this question cant be answered because what is small + bright? I mean a Zebralight Q50 will be very short and small for 800 Lumen but not smaller then a 4sevens Quark Mini CR2 but this has only 180 Lumen, so its always a compromise. So the best is to own both and you have 2 really bright and small lights, i wouldnt need bigger lights at all.

Thats why i have Zebralight H31,Klarus MIX6 Ti and Jetbeam PA40 but i know me and i will sell the PA40 for the Zebralight Q50 when its available because im always in search for smaller light with higher output.

Re: What is the smallest and brightest flashlight?

Well I've just purchased the Fenix LD20 for a bit less than 60 bucks at R.E.I. which has about 180 lumen and a decent run time. I believe it is within your 8" requirement. I like it, as it's so very light, bright, and lasts awhile on 2 AA's. I plan to attach it to my bicycle helmet.

I think you should look 1st at what batteries you want to use. Do you want to stay with the CR123A of the Scorpion® LED or go with 18650 Lithium-ion rechargeable and charger or AA (alkaline would not have the power, you need LSD NiMH and charger).
Next what you want to use your flashlight for? If you are walking in the woods, trails and places with lots of vegetation, get a neutral tint LED.
Next if you need throw or flood. Hint the newer brighter XML does not throw farther, just give you a bigger hotspot.
Almost all of todays bright lights are multilevel/multimode. Make sure you will get along with the UI (user interface). With some you will have to go through strobe/SOS when changing levels. With others the blinky modes are hidden.

I have listed some of the previous suggestions and added some variations below listing battery type.
-
Scorpion® LED - Two 3 volt CR123A - 160 lumens
-
The 4sevens Quark MiNis are twisty oeration. They have another lineup with tailcap button operation.
4Sevens Quark mini CR123 - One 3 volt CR123A - 3/40/189 lumens.
4Sevens Quark miniX CR123 - One 3 volt CR123A - 1.2/45/210 lumens.

4Sevens Quark Mini CR2 - One 3 volt CR2 funny battery - 3/40/180 lumens.
-
Fenix TK35 - Two 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable - 820/346/109/12 lumens.
Fenix LD 40 - 4AA - 248/110/43/4 lumens neutral tint.
-
The Zebralights have front side switches.
Zebralight SC31w - One 3 volt CR123A - 189 lumens max neutral tint
Zebralight SC31fw - One 3 volt CR123A - 180 lumens max neutral tint flood
Zebralight SC31 - One 3 volt CR123A - 220 lumens max
Zebralight SC31f - One 3 volt CR123A - 209 lumens max

Zebralight SC51w/SC51fw/SC51/SC51w - One 1.2V NiMH AA versions of the lights above.

Zebralight SC600 XM-L - One 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable - 750 lumens max.

Just need to award that prize on a per battery quantity & type basis. 1x18650, 2xCR123a, 2xAA, 1xcr123a etc.

One dimension I notice most don't take into account when comparing sizes, is diameter. It's really more of a which one's shortest competition. In edc's, I find a huge difference between how well a 1" & even 8/10" of an inch diameter works in pocket (maybe we need to compare volumes). Also, does it matter how long it has to be the brightest? Because if the guy with no name has his way he might have a submission for next year, if we can't convince him to listen to reason between now & then, & if ONE SECOND before stepdown counts!

Man if quark would ever make a 123^2 MiniX, that would be up there in brightness:volume ratio. Looks like EagleTac will be stepping up to fulfill that size 2xcr123a instead (4" x .78")! Just no "X" yet.

ROLL TIDE!
It sounds like you want something REALLY tiny perhaps? Do a search for "Drake" and "Draco". They are not made anymore but they do come up for sale here on rare occasion. I saw a Drake for sale only a week or so ago...don't know if it sold. I have one and will never sell it.

Hey-hi, I'm new to the CPF forums, cheers.

I've got one of the keyring LED Lensers (V9), fantastic size (less than 70mm long and less than 10mm wide without clip), but the output isn't mind-blowing.... so methinks the Lummi Wee or Raw might be my next EDC purchase.

Any opinions on the Lummi product?
