I'd avoid the Petzls. They can't be used with lithium batteries. They can't even be used with rechargeables anymore. The company is recalling them due to a design problem. After some use, the wire gets cut through causing a short. It could set your hair on fire. They say alkalines are still okay to use because they can't deliver enough power at once to cause the short (too much resistence in the cells). I'd go with the Princeton Tec, although I'd wait until it's updated. Princeton Tec is in the process of updating pretty much all of their headlights. The Apex and EOS will get Luxeon Rebel l.e.d.s and the Quad and Fuel will get Nichia GS l.e.d.s. This upgrade should make the lights twice as efficient, and for most, twice as bright on high. The new 50 lumen Eos, 45 lumen Quad, and 35 lumen Fuel are showing up in stores now. If you don't believe me about the Petzl headlights, check out this article. http://www.flashlightnews.org/story1669.shtml
If you can't afford Princeton Tec lights, pick another light for your own safety.

I would personally see about having the Apex sent to you somehow, maybe you can see about someone forwarding it to you from here in the USA.

If you decide to go that route, I personally think the 4xAA version is a better option if you are planning on using rechargeable cells. (NIMH, like eneloops). 4AA NIMH cells is a lot more energy storage than 2xRCR123s in the lithium version if you are planning on the rechargeable option.

If you are planning on using primary cells anyways, then the CR123 version is a great option, being less bulky on the head.

I can afford Princeton Tec but i can't afford the shipping, if i had someone to USA i think that sent by Regular Mail, it is going to be much much cheaper.
Here i can only find Petzl

Shooter,
Can you describe what you need from a headlamp. How will you be using it and under what conditions? There may be other, better choices available to you.

I think i can describe, but the problem is that i am very stuborn and i whant this one :)
It will be used multi-purpose

And i can see so far that i am not the only one who likes Priceton

+1 on this.

Lighthound (very nice dealer) has the Apex (both CR123 and AA version) at a good price, cheap international shipping and has a sale going until tuesday with 10% off his normal low pricing:D. Discount code 1492:

Princeton Tec is the winner in my mind because:

1. Water resistant
2. Compatibility with various battery chemistry types
3. Regulated
4. Flood and spot options
5. Numerous output options
6. Dual switching options possibly allowing you to use one mode if the other would fail(not certain because I don't know for sure about the circuitry but it does make sense due to separate controls for multiple led options)

That being said, I have never used a headlamp that has had a rear battery pack and I believe that I wouldn't like using one for the following reasons:

1. Double the amount of increased girth added to your head resulting in discomfort while working on your back, ie: working under a car or other cramped spaces
2. Increased weight and size, I mostly backpack
3. A little too large to place in your pocket should you want/need to remove the headlamp for any reason

I like the new Eos personally but you will not have the same output and battery capacity of the AA Apex.

I'm a fan of the PT Apex but 4xAA version. The headlamp that I previously used was a Petzl Zoom (3xAA or 4.5v cell) but that was an incandescent with ringy beams and non-regulated output.

The PT Apex is a great headlamp and, as indicated by saabgoblin, definitely versatile and gets my vote. I've used this light when camping and I don't mind the weight of the 4xAA battery pack as it's normally not on my head for more than 30 minutes. Point taken though about backpacking with this light as it is heavy but I have a solution for that below...

One plus is that the PT Apex can easily be modded with a SSC P4 for more output with same runtimes. Also, to reduce weight, I plan on cutting the battery pack and soldering dc connectors so that I can use either the stock 4AA battery pack or a 2x18650 Li-Ion battery pack that I have already built. I also have an extension with dc connectors so that I still use the headlamp and store the battery pack in a pocket or hydration pack.

Hi Shooterx, you will need to get the SSC P4 emitter only, not mounted to a star. Check out this thread for a complete step-by-step PT Apex mod...

As for purchasing the SSC P4's, check out this thread in CPF Market Place - Photonfanatic, who is an authorized dealer, sells the emitters. You just have to decide on whether you like the warm / cool tint.

Good luck.

Thanks for the answer, but i have problems with getting the Princeton from USA, due to big shipping fee so i thought that at least, buy the Led from Romania, if it is the same one.

I have 2 Apex headlamps. Both have SSC P4s in them.

One uses the stock 4AA pack, the other i a Pro and uses either 2 18650s in an external pack with a long cord. Usually the pack is on my belt or in a pocket. If I need something lighter I use the small 2 cr123 pack on the back of my head.

I was thinking of using one of the waterproof tubes from 4Seven as a 2 18650 pack, but haven't gotten around to making one. Any 3 C-cell light would also be a good host for this.

I don't mind the weight of the 4AA pack, but for long periods of time I prefer to use an 18650 pack since the part on my head in then almost weightless.

The led in your link looks right, but you can get one either from Fred who has the best ones (warm tint and very bright):

PS! You only need the emitter so getting it on a star is just extra work.

Or cheaply with free shipping from here:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2026

Both ship to Romania with no issues at all.

The soldering is easy and well worth it:twothumbs

Super good info, thank you very much, as regarding the bats carier i think we can use such holder and adapt it to be a two pack holder:

http://www.lighthound.com/Tools-Avi...-Battery-Holder-Carrier--Black_p_20-2182.html

or something like this:

http://www.lighthound.com/Pelican-1030-Case-Black-Solid_p_8-1458.html

Pelicases are very nice if you want to keep the batteries dry. A bit heavy though.
The older 3C Super Sabre lights from Pelican are great waterproof hosts, but hard to come by.

Please show some pics when you are finished making your set up:thumbsup:

OK but first i need to buy and receive a Priceton and after that probably i could show you something :)
