while cleaning today i found my light- it had rolled and dropped about a foot behind a stack of books. after i got over my joy of finding it, i saw that the lens was broken. i took the head off and saw that the brass ring, the electronics and the top of the battery are burned and have soot on them. also, on the top of the led are 2 small brown dots.

this is the ex10 that i've been having problems with- it was turning itself on in my pocket after using it. the battery that was in it is a battery station cr123a rated at 3volts.

so- what happened? i'm thinking it rolled off the shelf and turned itself on but i don't have a clue after that. i'll post some pics tomorrow.

If your flashlight used to turn itself on it is because there are problems with the circuit board... It could have been a short circuit.

Your light had a sticky piston ring. It sounds like it unstuck either spontaneously or upon impact and the light went into high mode. Mine did this in my backpack one day, but I noticed it probably after about 45min or so. It was super hot, so much so that I couldn't hold it directly in order to turn it off. The light itself seems undamaged, but the battery got so hot that the label partly melted off. It sounds like your light did the same thing, but ran the full course of the battery which caused it to really overheat and maybe even vent?

These little lights do get hot on high. There just isnt enough mass to dissapate the heat and it does put out about 110 lumens.
Could be it turned on upon impact and the little bugger cooked itself but I dont know if that can be called a defect?

I had my new R2 version of the EX10 activate in my pocket yesterday. I felt something hot in my pocket while riding my 4 wheeler around the yard and took the light out and did not see any light coming from it. I may not have noticed because it was bright outside or the AW protected cell may have cut off the light just before I removed from my pocket (not sure) I checked the battery and it was not nearly as hot as the body of the light and put it back in and it fired back up and seems to be working fine.

If the battery protection had "tripped" do you have to put it back on the charger for it to "reset" or can it reset itself?

It may have had a sticky retaining ring?

I hope that it is not some type of short in the light.

I thought that I would update my last post.

I have been carrying my light in my pocket everyday and it is working properly. I think that my issue was just the light being turned on by bouncing around on the 4 wheeler.

I just turn the light off by twisting now to prevent it happening again.

I had a similar problem with my Nitecore D10 R2 turning itself on in my pocket. I was using Energizer lithium primary AAs.
