I've been scanning this forum looking for a source for Crees with 5A tint (neutral) for use in a medical project I'm working on. There are several mentions that they are very common, but I don't see them at mouser or dealextreme. Where are they available in small quantities of 8 to 24 or so, with shipping to Canada?

thanks,

If you're willing to go with 5C or 5D, Cutter has them on star for $5.50ea in quantities of 10-24.

Thanks for the quick response. I'd seen mention of Cutter, but saw they are in Australia, correct? So I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that shipping costs and perhaps time would be an issue. (Not longer than dealextreme, of course, but their shipping is free...) If anyone else has other suggestions, I'm all ears, as beyond 5A might be getting too warm.

Hi Jbl,

I have some XR-E and XP-E Cree 5A's. They are Q3 Bin which means min. 93,9 lumen @350ma.

Hi kan3,
The thread mentions possibly mounting them on boards (would be easier for us to heatsink with those, I think) - are you doing this onto stars now? 20mm? What is the charge for doing so? Any idea how long shipping normally takes to Canada? thanks!

If you wanted XR-E Q3 5C, Shiningbeam has them on 15mm boards.

They are definitely on the warm side, almost incan in colour.

It usually takes 5 or 6 days for SB orders to get to me.

Its not hard to attach them to a larger heatsink.

If you are looking to make a flood light, you can use something like a computer heatsink, and thermal compound it to the heatsink, and attach the leads to the top.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just ordered 8 of them mounted on 16mm boards from eprom.

So, I have a 5A, kind of reddish. I hear 5B is same except instead of reddish it is yellowish. Is 5C a different color all together, or is it just yellower than 5B? I've been waiting for someone to get a hold of some 5B for a little while, but curious about what color 5C is.

Take a look at the last photo in this post for a Q3-5C vs Q5-WC.

Check out DFiorentino's thread, "Bin Coding: Color, Flux, ...". The entry, "Cree XLamp (Neutral-Warm White)" gives a visual estimate of tints 5A and 5B. The CIE charts make a good attempt to show what color a light source of a given rating looks like. But only up to a certain point. A desktop halogen lamp for instance is usually around 3000°-3200°K. They have a CRI of 100 so the BBL passes through them. That would be 7B or 7C. But a desk lamp doesn't look anything like 7B or 7C, IMO.
