Inretech, Terralux and Sandwichs. There is also a NewBeam. I don't know which one! I want something brighter than the stock incan

wellllllllll, how much $$$ ya got?

how bright do you need it?

how long do you want it to run?

Opalec makes about 45 lux, and runs for 9-10 hrs--fully regulated, dead flat output. not terribly bright, but a very useful beam.

Sammiches! love them all! read up in the sandwich shoppe area.

i have the BB400 and MMlite and opalec. all are sweet.
though expensive, they are amazing performers.

other options: UK4AALED for $20.
Streamlight Luxeon Jr for about $30.

happy hunting!

Bob

I have the Mini Mag already. And my dad doesn't want me spending $$$ this way, so the sleeper mod of Mini Mag conversions really appeal to me

The Newbeam is dimmer than the stock minimag. It runs a lot longer and is regulated and has a smoother beam, but it doesn't try to be brighter.

If you're after brightness, go with a Sandwich Shoppe sandwich and a good LED.

With no disrespect intended to dat2zip, however, I just wouldn't bother any more. I'd just get a light built with a led in the first place instead of messing with a minimag. The UKE and Streamlight mentioned are nice, as are the Arc4+ or Surefire L4 if you want something more upscale.

I'd like to keep it under $40. Anything above, I'll just toss the mag. I don't know which sandwich to pick either. Too many choices. I'll look into the SMD

oh.

too bad Wayne doesnt have any of the MMlite 1W HD's left.

they were a STEAL at $30.

i forgot about Lambda's stuff...would like to try some myself.

oddly, the streamlight may be your best bet. it looks like a stocker.

I have one of these doing quite well in my 3d mag.
32led-f.jpg

It's everywhere on ebay for about 40 bucks or slightly less.
Just enter in the search box; 32 led
And there ya go. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
There are also near ultraviolet versions of this showing up too for about the same price, for anybody needing one of those.
It's available for the 3d and the 4d gaglites with a resistor for each of the 32 leds. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Output is about the same as both my everleds put together.
It's using about 700 - 850 milliamps from my nimh D batteries. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Same power consumption as the stock bulb with no ambering out as the batteries unwind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The white version has a smooth icy cool white color with a barely perceptable slightly bluer center, but much less so than the Nichia leds we have come to know.
Nevertheless, the color rendering is still pretty good throughout the fairly even, wide spot/narrow flood beam pattern. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I have already had another guard drop this thing onto the concrete floor of the parking garage from 3 feet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon8.gif
No damage at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

Geez. Better make sure your mom doesn't cut herself on your Mag trying to turn it off...don't want to go through all that again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sssh.gif...

I have the Opalec, it's great; I also just got the Inretech, which is also great. So they're both great.

If you want to keep the MiniMag, the best bang for the buck comes from dat2zip's MM Lite w/1W Hi Dome. It's $30 and works amazingly well. For another $5, you can get the S017XA reflector that works tons better than the optic shipped with the MM. A fat O-ring is needed on the outer end of the reflector to hold it in the bezel so focus still works. Another $4 for shipping and it's still under your $40.
There should be more available soon. Keep an eye out for them.

I have the Teralux Ministar and it ROCKS! I've used it daily at work for at least a month or more, and it's still on the first set of batteries. The output blows the stock incandescent lamp away and the color is exactly that of my SF L4. I highly recommend it, also under $30.

What is the difference between the BB and the MM Sandwich? On the website, there are soooo many current(electrical current) options. Which one do I choose?

the Badboy is current regulated: it stays at the same brightness until the batteries are drained, then it "falls out of regulation"--dims.

example: on NIMH batteries, my BB400 ran for 2.5 hours at constant brightness (~400lux), then suddenly fell out of regulation (~90 lux), then it continued to dim for some time. the badboy falls out of regulation at 1.6 volts, so it tends to be good for rechargeables, since you dont want to discharge them too much.

the Madmax is a voltage step-up. this means that the more voltage, the brighter it is. the madmax slowly dims over time, and it will run the batteries down to 0,8 volts (i think). it really squeezes the power out of the bats.

for both, the higher the number (BB300, BB400, BB500, MMlite, MMplus, etc.) the more current going to the LED.

more current = BRIGHTER, but shorter runtime.
less current = dimmer, but longer runtime.

good luck!

Bob

Thanks for the detailed explanation Bob, it sure help me understand the sandwiches a whole lot more! I guessed the MM to be mad brightness to the max, but used to think that BB meant even 'badder' a** than the MM! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Ok so now I know... Don't mean to go off topic here, but while we're talking about them sandwiches, how's DB (Downboy) work then? Thanks in advance...

Well, I only use Ni Mhs for AAs, so I'll go with a bad boy (if I save enough) or the Terralux. Haven't heard about the InReTech though

Quick question, what is the difference between:
Madmax Lite WO Sandwich Module kit-Lux3 *FF2
Madmax Lite WO Sandwich Module kit-Lux3T * FF2-Compatible

I assume the Lux3 is an "S" bin and the Lux3T is a "T" bin.

The Lux3T should be about 10% brighter.

So as the letters go down the alphabet, they are better in tint?
(Nichia work the opposite way, which confuse me entirely)
I think I'll go with the Terralux. Is the reflector that comes with it any good?

The "T" is brightness not color tint. The "T" is the brightest bin of the Lux3s available.

I much prefer the Sandwiches with a "T" bin emitter.
