Luxeons exists in Lambertian, Batwing and Side Emitting.

Late to the discussion here, but if that is a 3AA it might be worth trying to fit a Flupic in there. It would be a bit more efficient than a simple resistor and you would gain multiple brightness levels. Depends on your budget as well of course.

But my budget won't allow such things. I'm going for about an hour on NimH and however bright that is.
