Will the new Cree ect. leds make any of you retire some of your incans?

I have been a huge incan fan for a long time. I have bought 30+ incans including 7 from surefire. My daily carry light is a sf with a p61 bulb. Between it and my gl4, I spend about $30 a month on sf 123'a. (there is a sportsman's warehouse right next to my work that sells 12 for $21.00)

Hearing sf's new led lights producing 60 & 120 lumans for hours, makes me want to retire my gpz and p61 lamp. Not just because of the money, but only having 20 minutes of light on me has always been part of the bright light equasion I have never liked.

Are any of you also planning to purchase more leds in the future, and save incan purchases for 300+ luman lights like I am verry tempted to do?

NO, I will most definitely NOT be buying ANY LED lights. I hate their cold, sterile, blue, color-distorting beams. At least for primary lights. They are livable for really small special purpose lights or colored lights though. Other than that, forget it.

Hey, you asked....

I've already ditched the outdated obsolete incandescent technology for LED's :)

I've only got a couple incandescent lights left and all of them are running rechargeables so the efficiency issue isn't also a $ issue. When the new KX heads become available for the E series I'll get one to put on my E2e.

With the Crees outputting 135 lumens, I have decided to gradually convert all my smaller lights (basically the 2x123-sized lights like the 6P/C2/G&Ps) to led when the Cree drop-ins arrive. I will limit my incans to the Mag hotwires (Mag11/Mag85/MagRop etc). Hopefully this will bring some order into my jumble of lights, bulbs, reflectors and lamp assemblies!

All my incans are 100+ lumens and rechargeable so the inefficient bulbs don't matter much.
The most used incan is 200+ lumens and a 400+ lumen one is on the way.

I use leds (U2 and HDS) the most, but for the really bright light outside in the woods I really prefer incans.

Untill leds give full spectrum light over 400 lumens I'll keep a few incans around:D

Has anyone actually compared, say, a Fenix P1D-CE beam with a Streamlight TL3's, since their supposed lumen ratings are comparable?

on flaslhlight forum's Shot Show thread, someone noted that PK indicated that SF is no longer developing incadescent lights. Interesting. I wonder if these brighter LEDs compensate for poor color rendition.

Since I got my MM L1P XRE, I quit EDCing my 6p w P61. Now it lives in my gun vault next to the bed. ~60 minutes on 1 AA compared to 20 minutes on 2 SF123s was the nail in the coffin.

I don't EDC any incans, and haven't in a while. I believe they still have their place. The incan color gives better outdoor rendition, more 3D and better definition. When viewing something at medium or better distance, it's incan all the way.

In spite of Crees and SSC LED recent strides, incans are not totally outdone yet. What single LED can produce 300+ lumens? Maybe in the near future, but right now?

It's getting harder to justify owning an incan light for me (at least a small incan). That said, I still frequently use my Pila GL3, and my A2.

I don't think I've used a stock Mag since I joined CPF, and those used to be my "go-to" lights.

Probably not unless it can exceed the performance of the higher output lights (Mag Charger/SL-20) in similarly sized lights or in a more compact form factor and exceed the output of corresponding incandescents (e.g. Stinger, TL-3, or even a Surefire M-3)

DAM! this is all sorts of incredible... what is it running at?

Nope. Just because there is better technology out there does not make what I have any less useful. In time I will upgrade my current LED lights, but I see no rush to. Meanwhile I will continue to be happy to use my incans for years to come.

I'll always have incans around. You can't beat the throw and color rendition.

Although for small keychain size lights, LEDs rule.
