Will this bulb work?

As I have mentioned in a few other earlier threads, I have a gutted military VSS-3 that is begging me to replace the missing original bulb/ballast with something else. I am not having much (if any) luck finding something suitable to put in it.

While on a recent vacation in central Illinois, I stopped by an electrical/radio place. The subject of searchlights came up, and the old guy handed me a couple of bulbs, saying they should work really good. They were pretty old, still packaged, and covered with years of dust.
The box said "General Electric Q250 CL/DC, 250W-120V". What are they, and pardon my ignorance, but do I understand them to be 120 volts DC, rather than 120 AC? Where am I going to find 120 volts DC?
If they are not going to be near as bright as what I want, I don't think I am going to mess around with them at all. If they will suffice, then, any ideas about a receptacle?
My web-fu didn't turn up much.
