After having lived in boarding school for quite some time, i got used to using a flashlight almost every night to find anything in my cupboard. But now living at home, I've never ever needed the use of a flashlight :(

Just the other day during a rain/windstorm there was a loud noise, which my family thought could have been a tree, so i went outside all the street lights were out and it was pitch black. Picked up the family Eveready Dolphin and had a look around. And was amazed at how relieving it was to have a flashlight handy.

After being in the market for a short while now for a edc style light, im almost hoping for some blackouts :D

Just wondering, how often do you all get to put your lights to use ? :naughty:

I probably turn at least on on a day... even if just fooling around with it. As for real uses, maybe 3-4 "questionable need" uses and a few a month where you say "IMAGINE IF I DIDN'T HAVE THIS LIGHT??"

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

Start going camping and you will find a lot of use for your flashlights :).

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

I use mine many many times each day. Once you have a good one and carry it you'll probably find lots of uses for it. When I used to drop something small on the floor or carpet in some cases I didn't even bother trying to find it as there were just too many dark recesses where things could go and it would take forever to find something. Now I just put a bright light on things and most often things get found quickly. I've got a basement and am often walking in the house at night so the EDC light comes out rather than flipping lights on everywhere. And working on very small things often I find I can see things again that I could not see except when I was much younger. Many many uses every day - you'll be suprised at all the things you use one for if you are just aware that it is on you and easy to get out. Try to have a light that is small enough to carry easily and setup to be convenient for use. Welcome back to the world of light :)

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

For actual use probably at least twice a day since I don't use the light outside of my front door. But do I really need to use it? Probably not, I can put on my shoes and find the key hole to my car with just moonlight but what fun is that in life.

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

I don't bother with lights in the house. Most of the time either my computer or one of my EDC flashlights is enough light to get around. I also seem to drop stuff into crevices where light does not really go, so flashlights come in handy very often here. I'd say my flashlights DO get every-day use for me.

Also, I work nights on campus, and everybody on this forum understands how useful flashlights are at night. :)

I see you have found enlightenment, grasshopper. Now use this newfound power for good. :D

I EDC my QIII all the time and I wind up using it almost daily. I often wind up illuminating something for a nearby person - their car door at night so they can find the lock, poorly lit stairwells, small items that were dropped into a dark area. I also use it a lot for illuminating the insides of equipment racks, computers, and work areas that are dimly lit.

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

If you have the bug, you will: 1) get an EDC, and 2) go out of your way to find uses for it. I can light up the yard like daylight with floods, but I'll turn everything off when I take out the trash so I can use my light. More fun that way...

i have a surefire L2 that i EDC and i don't know what i would without it. mine gets used about 10 times a day for just about everything once you pick up a surefire you just can't put it down

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

I was in the sales of flashlights and battery - "Eveready" of Union Carbide a long time ago. After retiring, and looking at some of the old flashlights that I am still having, I could not have imagine that flashlights have evolved to what it is today.

How will flashlights look like "tomorrow"?

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

I use LED flashlights every night both indoors and outdoors.

Outdoors:

I put the dog outside a few times each night and use a flashlight to see what critters are roaming around my yard and getting into the crops.

I take walks in the dark a few times each week and there are no street lights here.

Indoors:

Use a low power flashlight at night so I don't disturb my wife when she is asleep.
Use a light to look inside the dog's ears when cleaning them.
Some corners of the basement are dark and I use a flashlight to inspect the plumbing, water softener, etc.

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

Most of the power outages where I'm at are too short to realize until after the power has been restored. Last night's thunderstorm (from UPS logs):
06/08/2007 18:17:28 Power failure
06/08/2007 18:17:29 Power restored
06/08/2007 18:17:31 Power Failure
06/08/2007 18:17:32 Power restored

Both power failures were actually less than one second and the clock without a backup battery kept time. I was no where near my lights at the time (a few feet away), but I got them and the power stayed on for the rest of the storm.

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

for me it's not that i really NEED the light most of the time, but it sure as hell makes some things easier!
anyone who works with computers, like me, knows you sometimes need to take a look up close, and in a computer case there are way many dark corners that need some light. The same is true for any kind of mechanic aswell.
Also, i no longer use the lights in the house at night, my computer screen lights up my room, and when i get away from my computer, i just use the first flashlight i can get my hands on.

The only situation i recall pretty much needing the light was when the power died while i was in the restroom at school. It's a pretty big building, so i was nowhere near a window, and the bathroom didn't feature an emergency exit light. It would've taken me at least 30sec to find the exit if i didn't have a flashlight, which in the case of a serious emergency like a fire would've been time i didn't have to spare.

It looks like you have to get a Flashlight

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

I use mine everyday. They are a standard part of my tools. A higher power light( currently a nuwai q3) for walking thru basements/unlit buildings and a low power (fenix E0) for inspection and technical work. They become "edc" by default because I don't remove them from my belt even on my days off. An added bonus is all my flashlights and batteries are tax deductions.

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

When I need light during work hours, my Fenix P1 or my River Rock 1W 1AA (to be relplaced by MTE SSc 1AA!) do nicely.

At home I rarely NEED a light but often pick up two or more just to compare beams (or really just play with 'em!).

A little pocket (or belt holster) light is almost neccesary!!!

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

It looks like you have to get a Flashlight

Hahaha, i got a 2xAA Maglight i have from years and years ago, when i thought Maglights were the Ferrari of flashlights, and it served the needs i had, including several camping trips with my school. Then started lurking a bit in some specialist forums and found out that Australia has got squat in terms of flashlights and LED technology :D

Ill hopefully be doing some more reserach/lurking to find a nice small and well built light (i cant stand poorly built equipment, unless its so cheap you dont mind if it breaks or gets lost since its so easily replaceable, and not heavily relied upon).

On another note i have a AAA Mag Solitare (i think thats what its called) which i found in a drawer, who knows how long its been sitting there and it seems the battery leaked and sealed it shut...tried everything to unscrew it to no avail, i guess ill just buy a new one or change to a decent photon on a keychain, seems the Arc AAA is a bit expensive for a keychain light after all the shipping out here :(

Re: Wow, been a long time since i even turned on a flashligh

You should get the Fenix L0D-CE from Fenix Store as a key-chain light, I think the price includes shipping and taxes and there is a CPF8 8% discount coupon.

Video comparison(Fenix vs Maglite vs Surefire by glowgadgets)

Welcome to CPF!

My little cousin (5) is absolutely smitten with my McLux PD. He used it to closely examine his toy dinosaurs.

Once the house goes dark at night and the raccoons and deer come out to eat up my bird seed and veggie plants the flashlights also come out to play. I'll seldom turn on a regular light, except for the one in the refrigerator.
