Tonight we took the kidlins out to the beach after dinner. The goal was to find a few sand crabs- one of my kids' favorite pasttimes is to watch, then chase sand crabs. Tonight we took along my Seoul-modded Gladius + FM34 and my Amondotech N30. We used the N30's LEDs to find our way down to the water (it was around 9ish by then, nice and dark) and then I fired up the HID lamp. HOLY S**T! This thing is crazy bright.
I panned the light out onto the bay (we're in Lewes, DE at our weekend place) and I could spot anchored sailboats at least 1/2 mile away. We were illuminating markers on a distant beach, maybe 3/4 of a mile away. 3000 or so lumens is so illuminating! :naughty:
My father-in-law used the Gladius... with the beamshaper it puts out a wonderful diffuse, white light, just perfect to walk with. However, the incredible throw of the N30 is complimented with a nice, bright spill too, which easily swallowed the Gladius' beam. The N30 would ID a crab in the distance, then the kids would use the Gladius to hunt and chase the little critters. It was so cute!
Anyway, we had a great dinner (try Fish On next time you're in Lewes), and had a blast chasing crabs and enjoying the fresh sea air. Earlier in the day we took a bunker tour at Ft. Miles. They opened a special series of displays including a tour of one of the old 12" gun emplacements. My father-in-law spent time at the base back in the 1940s, so it was a great time for him, reminiscing and enjoying the renovations to the place. We used the Gladius to help illuminate a few dark spots while on the tour, and used it to illuminate the barrel of the beautiful 12" gun. Turns out the park has obtained a 16" gun for their 16" emplacement, but it is almost impossible to transport it back from its current location in Virginia. My father-in-law's father worked at the DC Naval Gun Factory. The DC NGF was one of the gun factories that was able to turn out 16" guns. So interesting!:twothumbs
