Is that an aspherical lens I see?

Very nice - and verrry old! A valuable antique, I would think.

What are you going to do with it? If you mod it, make sure you don't do anything that isn't reversible.

Very original. If I remember reading correctly the first generation made flashlights were designed to just momentarily flash hence the name flashlights. Later they were designed to stay on.
I wonder if there were flashaholics back in the 1800's?

Wow, that things amazing.
You better not even try to mod that..

lol, sorry for gettin your hopes up fellas, I don't own this light, and if I did I would surely never modify it...that would be like dropping a corvette motor in a model T! Yeah it's definitely neat...I don't know if it takes batteries or if that thing on the side is a wind up generator like we see on modern LED lights.

If I had to guess...and this is only that, a guess...I would say that thing thing on the side is probably a switch. If light_emitting_dude is correct, then the "flash" is probably so they could flash out morse code.

Just a guess!

Several years ago Restoration Hardware used to carry a coffee table book about antique flashlights. Lots of really cool pics including small side by side AA lights. The side by side was once a popular form factor. Wish I had bought a copy.

See here for more antique flashlights.

gee...dynamo lights didn't come about until...recently, and no RoyJ, back then battery technology is so primitive that cells last only minutes...hence lights are used in "bursts" only...hence the term: "flashlight" :nana:

the thing on the side is a hinge made specifically for momentarily on

There must have been at least one. Could you imagine the poor fellow who stood outside, at night, with one of those?? And he must have said to himself that there had to be a way to make it brighter.

Poor fellow.... He never lived long enough to see what we have today.... And we'll never live long enough to see what'll be around next century. :(

lol...so you're saying, the more McDonald's you eat, the less flashlights you will get to experience? Well it's off topic, but true none the less! On another note, seeing this old light has made me want to go on a hunt for antique flashlights. Somebody sold an old Steel and brass eveready for a good price not too long ago that was from the 50's I think...pretty cool stuff really!
