I checked out my new Zebralight H50w the arrive in the mail today.
..not a bad little light.
Nice solid construction. Clean threads and a bunch of extras that are really cool but I will probably never use. I got this for a headlamp only.
It fits snug in the holder to where it'll stay put but not too snug to where it's difficult to rotate if needed. The headband fits quite comfortable. When I first looked inside I thought there was little metal chips from the manufacturing process. But when my aging eyes were able to focus, I saw it was the electronics.
The first annoying thing I found was if you put any inward pressure on it while turning the knob, it'll register that as the next step up in power. So when you turn it on again (as you are ramping up to the power level) it would have register that last accidental contact as a step up. So make sure you rotate the knob with no inward pressure when changing power settings.
The other annoying thing is the glass covering the LED. It protrudes to where the bright light is seen you your peripheral vision. And those little lights are bright. so I have to make a conscience effort to keep it pointing up higher than I care for. If not that bright light will distract.
Another thing I now have to get used to is the neutral color light. After playing with my Quark, iTP and even my bluish tint Fenix E01 the H50w seems to be a bit yellowish but nothing I can't live with.
The last very minor thing is the light is almost too heavy for the headband. I feel a slight pulling on my forehead but, since I am not really a headlamp user, That will most likely disapate with usage.
I looked in the back of my CNC lathe to see how well it illuminated a small, closed in area. Very nice.
I looked around the inside of my car also worked well.
I walked in the woods by my house. It's almost a full moon so I made sure to go into a deep, tree covered area so it would be about as dark as it could be. Not so good. You get about 10 yards of somewhat lit area, and that's on high of a stated 60 lumens. The beam is way too broad of trial walking.
I got home and went in a pitch black closet and read a little out of a book. Low setting of 2.3 Lumens was difficult. Medium setting of 11 lumens was a little too bright but much better then the low. So far, I think the 60 Lumen setting is not necessary but that opinion may change the more I use it the light.
IMHO, I think this is a good inside the house, close quarter light. I would have no problem using it making my way though the house during power outages. I think it would be ideal for that.
It has a nice even beam with no preceptable rings or imperfections, blemishes, whatever you guys call them.
A clean beam, I'll leave it at that.
If all goes well, I am going to get the Fenix HL20 and the iTP A3 E0S
(I know it's a AAA but I really like the A3) for a comparison. When I do I'll check in with a report.
