Default 120 Lumen, World\'s Brightest Pocket Light

Well, I finally did it! I finally constructed a small pocket light, using a cyan 5 watt Luxeon Star, a 9V battery, etc.

Photos and a detailed description tomorrow. It's late, I'm tired and off to bed. (Yes, I do sleep, sometimes.)

THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME !!!!!!! How small is it? Does it eat batteries faster than a jack rabbit falling off a cliff?

Wayne,

Stop teasing, and sleep is no excuse for lack of photos/descriptions.

120 lumens for 10 seconds then 5 lumens for an hour?

Sorry guys (gals),

I was wiped out last night. I'll have something up shortly.

It sleeps on an aluminum sled,
with the 5 watt emitter at the head,
The 9 volt battery is in a plastic bed,
To the onlookers eyes it is a dread!

As I always say, Direct Drive, Baby!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have a cyan 5 watt in a 5 C cell converted Mag Lite, direct drive, with fresh batteries, and this sucker is just a little brighter. Probably needs a little resistance? Nah!

Here is a beam shot of the just mentioned 5 watt flashlight, in comparison to a lambertian 1 watt, direct drive, in a 3 D cell flashlight with fresh batteries:

This little Zorch is just a little bit brighter! Well, maybe more than a little bit. It is a bright little thing!

Would the LS die or the battery run out first ?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have run a cyan 5 watt on 6 AA's before, in a 3 D flashlight. After about 5 minutes it got pretty warm, so I shut it down to cool. So at 9 volts even a 3 D aluminum flashlight is not enough heat sink. This only has the aluminum you see as the sink. So it can only be used for a moment or so, or it will get hot. Of course, I could set it on a larger metal object to help sink the heat. But it will not last long on the 9V battery. I have left it on up to about 45 seconds, and it only felt warm around the emitter.

The 5 watt emitter is not as fragile as some seem to think it is. Nor does it emit as much heat as some think it might. If run at specs, it is very manageable. Did I say 'Run at specs?'

I'm just trying to imagine what type of mods you'll be making in two years time.

With the speed LED technology is evolving, I'm expecting something the size af a 9v battery with the output of a Surefire M6 and a two day runtime

EDIT

Bet if we're all still here on CPF, it just wont be enough light (still be waiting for that 200 watt ls group buy)

"Twenty minutes would be outstanding, if it could be achieved!"

Hey Wayne,

The brightest SureFires all run only twenty minutes on their HOLAs, and they seem to be selling well...I say go for it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I just made this for a joke. However, maybe there is something to it? Obviously, it needs some sort of flashlight looking casing, and would need to be at least water resistant.

I think if a strobing circuit were added, it could be used for self defense. It would completely disorient an attacker. At least, it is disorienting everybody I show it to! Anybody have a spare 555 timing circuit available?

make it even a little smaller, with a slick casing, and a pricetag under $40 and u got a sale !

I think a light this size with that kind of output would be a big seller.
Is it really 120 lumens?
Put the light on a good heat sink just for the purpose of finding out runtime. Anything close to ten minutes is a winner as far as I'm concerned. It makes for a great emergency light ( You will always have it pocketed )

Wondering if there is an oversized lighter out there that will work as the container.

This little torch looks like somethng I dreamed up in a sci fi novel I wrote some 9 or 10 years ago! One day we will have a torch the size of a 35mm film can that can outshine a 100W halogen bulb!
There could be a serous application for this torch though. I would recommend the use of high capacity NiMH rechargeable PP3's...if the torch "chassis" as shown is built into some kind of case with a charging socket that can be powered off a wall wart or a ciggie lighter adaptor in a car to charge it... that'd make the torch more practical!

Could you perhaps try using a 7.2 or 8.4 volt NiMH "9 volt" battery? You should get a good 10-20 minutes total runtime with a 150-200 mAh battery. So wouldn't you basically have a cheap to run 9P that is a lot smaller?
