Its not a regular AA flashlight. It is very bright and has a great dimming mechanism which also allows more versatility. This light is a great light but the one i got had a postive contact issue which made it turn off and on also flickered. It has 5 Super bright Nichia CS led's which are about 2x the brightness of regular LEDs. Its a great light and i think they fixed the positve contact issue so its good to go!

If you do a search for the proton, you'll come up with a bunch of hits.

Here's one particularly long thread:

https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/118092

While many CPFers rave about this light, all the raving doesn't change what it is: it's still just a floodlight with the much despised bluish hotspot, and only semi-regulation over its runtime, and a thousand mode user interface to cycle through.

I guess the microprocessor and token addition of the red LED are enough to make some people look past the poor quality beam and poor regulation. The proton just appears to be a step backwards compared to other lights of a much lower price range.
