I have an ocular lens group from a Telescopic rifle sight that I use as a jeweler's loop. Lens groups from field glasses, binoculars or some slide projectors work for this use too.
I found I could hold it over an illuminated LED and project the magnified image onto a white wall or surface. The depth of focus is short so I am able to project an infinite planar view of the LED at levels by moving the lens set in or out in relation to the LED.
With this I was able to observe the poor emissions from a damaged Luxeon clone die. I also could examine a bubbled epoxy lens on one. You definitely can see the various illuminated components of the die with this method.
