Well, today (11/30) is another holiday that seemingly has its roots in flashaholics of days gone by.
A group trying to restore a temple destroyed by the Greeks found they only had enough oil to light a sacred eternal flame for one day.
Extra oil was an 8-day walk away, so they lit the flame, fueled with one-day's worth of fuel, and prayed.
The flame, on one day's tiny pot's worth of oil, burned for 8 days ... time enough for extra oil to be retrieved.
And for this reason ... to celebrate liberation from the Greeks, Jews around the world today light an 8 day eight candle menorah, known as a 'Chanukia' to commemorate the eight days of the miracle.
Talk about getting a lot of light from a little source!
Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah) to our jewish CPF friends!
