I attacked with my tin snips at dawn.

The victim was an L2T that had long since failed and been forgotten about.
Originally, it was going to go back to the vendor, but no more.

i cut through the anodized aluminum threads and extracted the brass engine.

i butchered the resoldering of the contacts top and bottom, and made a melted mess out of the dome lens, before it fell off.

with superglue as my ally, i repositioned the dome for another attack.

i allso soldered a bridge between the negative contact ring and the brass engine, in a most grizzly way.

and with my electrodes at 3 volts, the victim had returned from the grave. the frankenfenix was alive!

i drilled a hole in an altiods tin (ginger chocolate) and slopped it in with all manner of adhesives.

it was ugly.

a trip to the rat shack got me a 4AAA holder, with switch, which was allso next in line for the wrath of the tin snips, and some custom hacking to make it fit.

the zombies at the dollar store sold me 2 four packs of super heavy duty AAA's for two dollars, after seeing rechargable AAA's at radio shack for 5 dollars a piece, or $20 for a 4 pack. talk about brutal...

and as i sit, the glue is curing. soon, the final soldering will begin.
soon, we will have a luxeon III slaughter at 6 volts.
i love the smell of lumens in the morning.
----
ill have pics soon, as well as a test (perhaps even a video of it?)
im giving it between 20 and 40 seconds to survive.
$1 for liquid epoxy
$1 for super glue
$2.05 for the battery holder.
$2.00 for more batteries than it has any chance of surviving.
the other stuff i just scrounged up.

i just looked it up and it seems i am not the first with an LED in an altiods tin. im just the first one to make one so evil.

I dont believe it.

its taking 6 volts!

its probably got a minuete of runtime like this and about 20 on/off cycles.
best part is ive got it all on video.

its probably comperable in brightness to a cree with no reflector.

somehow, its allso completely cool to the touch.

Update: ive gotten it to go supernova a few times, where it is EASILY as bright as a cree, and does get proper warm, but im not brave enough to let it go on, and after a short cool down it comes back weak.
unfortunately, the solder joint broke on the battery pack, (radio shacks solder joint, not my own) so its lights out untill i feel like resoldering it. i love seein blue spots everywhere...

i have video shot, its just got to be edited and presentable, and then i have to find hosting.

i allso soldered "keeper" blobs into the tin to keep the battery holder from moving around when i repaired the broken wire. the switch is a little iffy.

MORE IMPORTANTLY....

i think the dollar store AAA alkalines, the switch, solder joints and wires are somehow adding in enough resistance to keep it from becoming a flaming ball of death, by some strange, unintended miracle.

its just sitting here on the desk. running.
ah! it just did the supernova thing for me again.

i wish i could make absurd custom flashlights for a living...

Youtube! No hosting needed, unless you want to show it in full quality. For that I believe you can use photobucket or similar.

Me too... it's so much fun! In fact, I'm about to update this thread with more ridiculousness. I'd love to get paid for doing this.

Looking forward to your vid!

That's great!

Hahaha... great, Orion! This thread is no longer useless. ;)

I love how you describe it going into supernova, and the masking tape in the vid.

BTW, the music was a great choice for this... nice feedback at the end too.

The Masking tape was at a connection i soldered.

i needed an insulator, and because i figured it would be killed in 30 seconds, i just picked up what was closest. no sense in making a proper heatshrink job...

its still goin. ive probably got a good half hour of use out of it.
somehow, i think it might live long enough to make the masking tape have me look a fool. its actually a great little tabletop lantern. i used it this morning when i got up before i could find my L2D.

allso, i used my L2D in the shots for brightness reference. (turbo)

ive removed the switch that came with the battery case and hotwired it. the switch wasnt that great. i allso had the negative lead on the battery pack break.

to turn it off i just pull a battery and toss it loose in the tin.
reverse to turn on. KISS, right?
you would think radio shack parts of all places would be soldered better...
