will a fenix L2D head on a L1D body (1 cell) still be just as bright with NI-MH cells or does it require a Li-Ion cell to be the same brightness

The L2D, L1D and P2D all uses the same head. The head will adjust brightness according to battery voltage as can be seen from the specifications for the different bodies.
Li-ion will force the head into direct drive and may damage the led (But usual it works ok).

To answer the question no it will not be as bright as it is with 2 nimh. You basically lose turbo, with only one cell it is just barely brighter than high. Unless you can find a 3.0v 14500 then there is no reason to seek lithium, the story is about the same with the L92 variety as with nimh you will jsut get better runtime at the cost of losing rechargeability. And going with a 3.7v Li-ion will result in a complete loss of the lower modes.

Low, medium and high are the same for L1/L2 D.
The only difference is turbo is lower on the L1D.

With the L2D head on the L1D, you'll get a L1D. They have the same circuit. Output for high and turbo are similar/same with the L1D.
