HANDY SIZE & WEIGHT CHART FOR 31 POPULAR INCANDESCENT & LED LIGHTS - REV 3

7/14/03 - Enlarged and updated from earlier versions

Here are measurements for 31 popular incandescent and LED lights. For measuring weight I used a Pelouze digital postal scale with a claimed accuracy of 1/10 Gram. All measurements of length are from the front to the furthest end of the body, excluding push buttons (on those lights without a body or twist switch), which on average protrude approximately 1/8" to 3/16 inch. Three of the tailswitch lights did not have protruding push buttons: the ASP Taclite whose button is recessed , the TACM III whose tailcap functions as the push button, and the Scorpion whose hidden tailswitch is internally integrated with the body.

Bezel diameter is measured from the front of the light. (Several lights have bezels that widen slightly toward their rear-most end). Lacking calipers or similar instruments, most body diameter measurements of round lights are taken from the tailcap as it usually represents maximum body diameter However, minimum body diameters are given for the two "combat lights" in this list; the Surefire M2 and G2Z . Margins of error for size and weight should not exceed 1/16" or 1/10oz. Please let me know if any errors exceed those parameters.

I have divided the lights into 2 main categories, nonrechargeables and rechargeables. The non- rechargeables are subdivided into six groups: 2x123's, 3x123's, 6x123's (M6), AA's (all 4AA except for 2AA Maglite and 2AA ARC LSH-P)), the 8AA Surge and two larger Maglites. All weights include batteries; All AA, C and D lights are loaded with alkalines. Within each group lights are listed by length, from longest to shortest.

* Add 1/8" to length for pushbutton
** SF M6 body diameter averaged because of variable
dimensions and unique knurling
*** ARC 2AA dimensions varied minutely throughout its evolution.
+ Integrated lanyard holder included in length
++ UKE 4AA and Mini Q40 body width increases to 1 15/16" if measurements include side-mounted
lanyard holders
^ G2Z weight without lanyard

Note: Length of focusable lights can vary considerably, especially Maglights.

I find this chart useful in comparing lights. I considered including brief beam descriptions, but decided to keep it quick and simple. For a more complete listing see Brock's charts.

A very handy reference. Thanks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I'm going to print a copy before it gets lost in the hundreds of other posts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Handy size & wt chart for 27 popular lights

Princeton TEC without lanyard is more like 5.1(4) oz (145-146 g) on my scale. This is the "official" specification, too.
Oh, and the "claimed accuracy" for a scale. The accuracy of the scale is very sensitive to the calibration process (this is not the usual calibration to zero). If you just calibrate to zero a scale in a typical (=non-controlled) environment you get at most 1-3 % accuracy. If you do a proper calibration with 100/200 g class calibration mass then you can get a very good accuracy indeed.

itsme,

Thanks for that heads up. Your post inspired me to compare my figures for four Surefire lights with the official ones, and in no case were they off more than 0.1oz. So I know my scale accuracy is within the claimed 0.1oz.

OTOH, your scale agrees with the official PTec figures. It's a bit puzzling. Either your scale or mine is wrong, or Surefire or PTec are wrong, or any combination of the above!

I'm going to assume that Surefire's figures are pretty good, and since I tested and compared several lights which all agreed (within 0.1oz) with the official figures I'm going to go with my figures.

Still, it is a puzzle, and it's bothering me. I used alkaline AA's for my calculations. Perhaps there are different densities of alkaline batteries? Just 0.1oz difference per battery could account for the disparity.

If it's not too much trouble, would you consider checking your scale's results for some of your Surefires against the official figures? You seem like someone who is knowledgeable about the technical end of things and I'm sure that you have a very accurate scale. This is one reason why this inconsistancy keeps nagging me, I'd really like to figure out what's up here.

Thanks Jim, Snuffy and K-T

I'm still double checking my figures and I'm beginning to discover something verrry interesting, not about my figures, but about those from "reliable" manufacturers.

My scale should be +-1.5 g in the 150g range, but I can't really guarantee it. My alkys (both rayovac and varta) are 0.87 oz each (I think I read somewhere that AA alky are 0.90 ?). And I don't have any weights to check my scale; no surefires too (Europe, 124 EUR for e2ee, 77 eur for G2 ...).

Stangster,

I rechecked the Surge and realized I only gave one dimension of the body width. It should read 1 11/16" x 1 7/16"
