Does anyone know what Victoria Police are issued with in the way of LED flashlights??

I was walking the other day and saw them parked up by the side of the road, and as I got a little closer (I was walking along the footpath by where they where parked) I got hit in the face with a fairly bright, very blue light LED light, just wondering if anyone knows what it may have been?

Of course it may have been the officers personal light, not an issue light at all...

Would have been personal light bought by the officer. Only issued lights to general duties members are 3D maglite and Mag chargers. Some specialist units get Surefire G2/G2Z or similar.

Many, many members have bought their own lights.

I was watching the recruit. One female officer had a 6p. Also magchargers? Thats cheaper than a g2z.

That recruit show is NSW Police isn't it? I have no idea what they use up there. I have mates that have come from Federal Police and they are issued Surefire 6P.

Where I work (Victoria) a lot of blokes have bought Led Lenser mainly because they can use AAA batteries. The cost of CR123 primaries is a big issue as you have to purchase them your self. I use a 18650 powered light and have encouraged others to go down that path too. A few blokes at work use Fenix TK11 now and a couple just bought Eagletac T100C2. The twist head between Turbo/General is a very good UI for Police as you don't have to worry about the light changing modes when SHTF.

THAT'S BOGAN, MATE! (yay, I got to use aussie slang!)

LOL I've never thought of using bogan in that way... But I guess it works:crackup:

As for the Vic cops, they are issued with M@gs according to one of my mates whos a cop in Belgrave. But when he saw some of my lights he, like most others bought his own LED light... He got himself a Led Lenser P7. He loved my C2 and M60 setup I have, but couldn't stomach the cost of the CR123s in Australia...

General duties members aren't issued any flashlights within Victoria Police. Each station has a number of MagChargers and Mag LED's (3D) which can be signed out shift by shift, however they aren't personal issue.

When Vic Pol upgrade to semi-auto's next year, a tactical LED firearm light will be personally issued to members (negotiations are going on now regarding which tactical light it will be).

Will this be attached to the gun? or something the size of a TK10 sort of thing that will go in a pouch next to the gun?

I can imagine their being issues if the only light an officer has on him is attached to his firearm....

I still think giving them semi-autos is a bad idea too...

There will be a light attached to the firearm, something similar to a surefire X300. VicPol is also going to issue a "mini torch" to operational members aswell. Something similar size to Surefire 6P, TK10 etc.

Whats you issue against semi-autos? You do realize that VicPol is one of the last Police departments in the developed world using revolvers? They are going to a more modern piece of equipment that has more safety features, easier handling, is more accurate and has a larger range of accessories (holsters, grips, sights etc). It's like saying that you disagree with Police having bright rechargeable lights and they should stick with an old dolphin torch. I just can't understand why you would want police having to use old equipment when there is better and safer alternatives?

Because the Victorian police only train with their firearms once or twice a year. (I think it might be 6 monthly now), and semi-autos jam, and if you only train twice a year its not going to be reflex for you to clear the jam.

They have safeties etc that have to be taken off (slowing deployment time).

They dont often need more than 6 shots.

If a round misfires you have to clear it manually, with a revolver you just pull the trigger again.

I also disagree with your comment that autos are more accurate. I would say in general of the handguns i have seen/used the revolvers have been on the whole more accurate.

I dont disagree that semi-autos are better on the whole, its just that you need to train at least once a month with it. If your only going to shoot a few rounds every 6 months a revolver is simpler and more reliable and relies on more cognitive skills, you pull it out, pull the trigger six times, it goes bang six times.

If they need more firepower I think it should be given to them in the form of a longarm in their car (12g shotgun/AR15/bolt action rifle something like that)

I train about once every 2 weeks with my pistol and if i was going to get in a firefight I would rather have a revolver (short of having a real gun). We rarely get though 100 shots at the pistol club without seeing a jam.

Tell your pistol club members to clean their guns more :naughty::naughty:. When I used to shoot pistol, I had hardly any jams, because I was totally anal with my maintenance.

A mate of mine is gonna join the NSW police force this year. I'll probably give him a TK11

lol, i think a lot of the problem is actually home loaded ammo :) whenever I be a bit extravagant and use factory loads I very rarely get jams/misfires. But as you said "hardly any" is still a lot more jams than none.

I should have also added in my previous comment that the UK and NZ police are still managing without guns at all...

I think your mate is very lucky :) a TK11 would be a good choice for a cop, 2 modes, tough. Take that silly cigar grip ring off and put the gold ring on and jobs right. Make sure you give him some rechargeable batteries and a charger. Dont want him forking out $20 every change of batteries..
