So I originally going to get a Zebralight H600fw mk2 but decided to get a decent flashlight instead and keep getting by with my Petzl Tikka plus until I upgrade headlamps down the road. I've looked at a plethora of reviews in this forum and am mainly looking at the Thrunite TN31 and TN35.
Ideally I want a light that has a fair amount of throw with some spill to light the surrounding area. It will be an all around light to piddle with, check for things that go bump in the night, check the area I'm in, search and rescue, and if possible use in structure fires.
I'd like real world advice when a particular light is suggested. I know I probably can't get everything I'm after with my budget at the moment, so search and rescue/fire lighting is going to be the primary objective. All help and knowledge is greatly appreciated! American made is a plus!

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light in person from a brick and mortar store. I am located in ______________.
__X_This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I don't know yet
____Up to $25.
____Up to $50.
__X__Up to $100.
____Up to $200.
____Up to $300.
____Essentially unlimited.

3) Format:

____I am not sure, please help me decide.
__X__I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).
____I want a self-contained headlamp.
____I want a headlamp with an external pack/power source.
____I want a mounted light (typically for a bicycle or vehicle)
____I want a lantern/area light.
____I want a portable spotlight (it may have an external power source).
____Other ____________________________________________

4) Size:

____MICRO - Keychain size.
____TINY - Every day carry (2-4 inches).
__X__SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
__X__MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)
__X__LARGE - Big enough to need its own travel case.
____I don't know/I don't care.

5) Emitter/Light source:

__X__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

__X__I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would like a light from a specialty manufacturer (Possibly limited run/Custom).
____I am interested in assembling my own components. (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source).

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Alkaline batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Lithium batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D and CR123 sized cells common to most stores (often a cold weather or long storage choice).
____I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
__X__I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery pack.
____I don't know/I need more information on power sources.

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option
____I want a light that plugs directly into the wall (literally with prongs built into the light)
____I want a light that has a recharging adapter (your typical "wall wart")
____I want a light that snaps into a cradle (usually mounted on a wall)
____I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)
____I don't care

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (1-10 lumens).
____I want an indoor "blackout" light (15-50 lumens)
____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
__X__I want search and rescue type illumination (800+ lumens).

__X__SPECIAL NOTE: Burst/Turbo mode Category - There are several lights that will run at a super bright maximum for a very limited period (usually 5-10 minutes) and then will "step-down" to a lower level for thermal control. Check here if this is acceptable.

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____All Flood: I am doing "arms length" tasks like reading and campsite cooking.
____Wide Flood: I want a defined flood area for semi-close tasks like after-dark campsite tasks or working on a car.
____Narrow Flood: I want a sharply defined flood area that will project some distance for tasks like trail walking.
__X__Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.
__X__Narrow Throw: I want a beam with a very tight "hot center" and minimal "side-spill". Good for distance viewing, fog, and looking through dense undergrowth.
____Turbohead: I want a far-distance projector with a sharply focused spot of light and minimal or zero side-spill. Good for extreme distance and impressing your friends.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)
__X__Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
__X__Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
__X__5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
__X__30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
__X__50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
__X__150+ yards (I am searching from a helicopter)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
__X__30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
___X_90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
___X_3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
__X__Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't know.

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

__X__Any size switch will do.
____I need a BIG switch (I'll be using gloves or have very large hands or coordination issues).
____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I want a remote switch (usually found on high-end bicycle headlights)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
__X__I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
__X__I want a strobe mode. (Oscillating pattern to confuse/blind aka "Police Mode")
____I want SOS mode. (blinks in ---...--- emergency pattern)
____I want a beacon mode. (Regular flashes at full power to show location.)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
__X__Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
____Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
__X__I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Water resistance

__X__Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking, Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

The Thrunite TN32 and TN35 are great all-around throwy bright lights with excellent build quality, but they are quite bulky and heavy (especially if you plan on doing any hiking or long range search/rescue with them!).

For a light with really decent throw that still has acceptable spill, and is MUCH more portable and easy to handle, I'd recommend either an EagleTac S200C2 or (if you can still find one...) an Armytek Predator Pro 2.5. Both lights are available in Neutral/warm white or cool white. I did a comparison review of the 2 lights on this forum recently, if you'd like the rundown of pros/cons of each.

P.S. Find a way to budget that H600Fw somehow... you are going to LOVE it! :)

Thanks Amelia! Honestly, weight doesn't concern me too much, it just builds strength and I find myself on hikes always adding extra weight lol.
I really like the looks of that eagletac but I worry it won't be enough light. I would probably be perfectly fine with it, but not knowing what I specifically want or need, I'm swayed towards the bigger more powerful lights.
I'll have to look for your review.

Well... if you don't mind the extra weight, then here are my thoughts:

I own both the TN32 (successor to the TN31) in Neutral White emitter version, and the TN35 (Actually, TN35vn, with a bit more output).
I think the TN35 is the better "general purpose" light, it has better spill and just seems to be a better beam shape for all-around use. It still throws really well though. I love the emitter tint too! I've only had this light and used it for 2 days now, but it's already one of my all-time favorites.
The TN32 throws better though... sacrificing spill beam, tint, and up close usefulness to really reach out there. I see it as a very specialized light, for a narrow range of applications.
Both lights are rugged, good looking, well made, and have an excellent magnetic ring UI with good solid detents.
I don't think you can go wrong with either light, but if you're like most people around here, you'll probably eventually end up with both! :)

Real world advice, get a ZL H600W and a pocket clip for a 502, then after you've got the clip where you like it, slip two layers of heat shrink tubing over the clip and heat it a little.

Or just get a bunch of lights.

Ha if this ends up like I am with knives or guns, I'll end up with too many. For now, I can only swing one...which I preferably want something with some throw but I 'd trade that for the better/best all around light. Is there a reliable light out there for 100 or less that can put say 1 lux at 100m or so with a useful beam?

The TN35 you've been considering will do far better than that, for around $129. Probably $10-$15 cheaper with a coupon, if you shop around. One of the best neutral white tints I've ever seen on a light too. Real nice compromise of throw vs. spill.

The TN32 is out of your price range, and is probably too "throwy" for general purpose use when you only have 1 light.

The EagleTac S200C2 will also give you an impressive amount of light, easily meeting your needs (417M to 1/4Lux), and be a WHOLE lot easier to handle, carry, and pocket - for around $75. It's mainly a thrower, but still has enough spill to be useful.

The Armytek Predator Pro 2.5 will do the same as the S200C2, at around $100 (if you can still find one... they're getting scarcer) and give you the added capability of customizing your mode spacing and pattern. Tougher construction too.

Lots of other lights will also give you what you want in your budget range, but those are what I'd suggest.

I'll have to check into the armytek and s200c2. I really like the looks of that TN35, but second guessing it only due to size. It would be nice to have something to be able to stick in a pocket and carry, not to mention I should probably start carrying a light since it seems like everytime I need it, I'm never around my truck. The ability to grab a light from my pocket and identify a potential threat before the sights are put on target isn't a bad idea either.

Great advice by Amelia:)
The tn35 is a great light, love the mtg2 led,its one of my fav for a nice mix of flood and throw but as stated on the larger side .

Now i am going to throw a light in here, its pocketable and packs a huge punch. So it kind of fits what you want other than cost, its a bit over budget.....
tm06vn with the U3 dome on,even though it has shallow reflectors...........it throws well,an awesome wall of light at well over 4500lm and out the front lumen, probably 6000 ish at the leds..........maybe more!
Nitecore TM06vn XML2 U3 Domes on
Samsung 20r
4697@ turn on
4593@ 30 sec
2766 high
710 mid
150 low
4 firefly
Throw - 45,000 Lux
Measured by Justin
One for sale right now........bargain imho as a great light!

Pics for size

Both have lows for around house

In hand for size

I would say the tm06 is pocketable ,the tn35 also..........if you have clown pants

Either way i would have a smaller single 18650 as back up:)

That tm06 looks awesome ven! I actually really like the way it looks. If I were patient I could probably budget it in within the next 2-3 weeks if it were still for sale. Patience though, is becoming harder to have, as the more I read this forum the more I want a decent light NOW haha.

 oh trust me I know how it feels. My advice and it's a tough one to do ......take your time and as Chris says" buy once ,cry once!"

I am sure what ever you buy,no matter how much or little you spend it won't be enough. There are just so many choices of lights, led options ,flood, throw ,a mix of the two . I am yet to find a light that does it all and sure I never will....... But it's fun in the search.....(just an excuse I guess as I know there is no perfect light).

The tm06 is a great light, only flaw is the standby. If your ok with unscrewing the tail cap a few turns in between uses its no big problem. However on standby it uses 2 of the 4 cells to flash etc causing the cells to drain quicker than the other 2 . It's a poor design ,no getting away from it BUT again it depends on use,how I use it the cells stay very close in voltage.

Have you looked at the fenix tk35ue with an mtg2 led, fed on 2x18650 cells which makes it more compact than the tn35.....just not as much output. Only a thought and a great tint......

Good luck on your quest :)
