Dukester,

The 2nd generation TL2 Luxeon is regulated. I don't own one, but my guess is that 2xRCR123's will damage the electronics (may go as high as 8.4V). Pila 168s will do fine, but with 20% reduced output, according to Quickbeam's excellent site (FlashlightReviews.com).

Dukester...if I'm not mistaken, both the old and new generation of the SL TL-2 LED are 1 watters, not LuxIII.

Actually PJD, you may be thinking of another light. This is the light I am referring to and it is a 3w LuX.

Task-Light™ 2L3W

Versatile, durable, with exceptional brightness and long run time.

• Powered by two 3 volt CR123A lithium batteries with a shelf life of nearly 10 years (included)
• 3 watt Luxeon® Star, super high-flux LED with 20,000-hour life
• Up to 77 lumens typical – 20 times brighter than a high-intensity LED
• High (100%): Runs 3 hrs, at High (100%): regulated maximum intensity plus 1.5+ hrs. of declining usable light
• Low (25%): 9+ hrs.
• 1.33" (D) x 6.12" (L)
• 6 oz. with batteries
• Available in matte black

You can read about the light here... http://www.streamlight.com/tl2l3w.htm

The light was introduced I believe last Winter.

The real TL-2 is a 1 watter. The TaskLight 2L3W is a 3watter, and somewhat of an odd Streamlight; it isn't too popular, but should be.

Yes dano, you are correct and I do stand corrected. I have always liked this torch since I bought it last winter. The throw on it is pretty remarkable and I would like this light even more if it could handle RCR123's.

Because this light is being run with two Cr123's, starting out at 6.5 volts (3.25volts each), it probably utilizes a buck circuit, and may tolerate higher voltage. I am not sure if the circuit can handle 8.4 volts, but maybe someone has the answer.

I use the Pila 168s Rechargeable Li-ion in mine,
it works just fine.

Pwdrkeg What's the voltage rating on your 168's? I suppose I could go ahead and look it up.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

They are the same size as two CR123 lithium batteries and
are rated at 1400 mAh & 3.7v each. I believe they produce
a little over 4v fresh off the charger and seem to work very
well in the SL 2L.

Okay, I see! You're talking about the 2L 3W luxeon task light with 2 brightness settings. My bad...I thought you were referring to the new version TL-2 LED.

Pwdrkeg Thanks a lot for the info. I ordered a Li-Ion Charger plus 4 RCR123 Batteries and the TaskLight 2L3W will be one of the lights I will use them in. Dano hit it on the head, this light is a hidden wonder in my opinion, has descent throw and output.

Pwdrkeg,
neat avatar. At first glance I thought it was a tree that someone had set ablaze by illuminating with a megaray. No shortage of adrenalin in your life is there?
