To get the most lux from the aspherics you want the die slightly out of focus. If you can see the die clearly you're not where you want to be. You almost need a lux meter to find the sweet spot. Keep adjusting the focus until you get the highest reading. Basically you want it to look like you are taking the die's clear image and de-focusing it a bit, but you should see an intense hot spot appear in the middle of the image of the die.


I did that very same thing and made a note of it in my openning thread. That is why I gave the focused and un-focused 1 meter lux readings.

I now have to do the un-focused readings at 5 meters and my Eneloops are just about ready.


Regardless of lux to get the most throw am I suppose to do beamshoots focused or un-focused w/Aspheric?:poke:

Just follow my suggestion. I think I know what he is referring to and it is not really a beam pattern that is of any real use in the real world or very pleasing. It could be unique to the optics he has used as well. The DEFTs lens setup is as I said not intended to be exactly like the other lenses out there. Make it look "right" if you know what I mean.
 
From selfbuilt's reviews, it seems that simply multiplying lux readings by the distance squared gives reasonably accurate results; mathematically, it works, and even accounts for air and other atmospheric conditions, so it would make sense. In other words, multiply your 5 meter readings by 25 to get comparable 1 meter readings without the issue of collimation and other problems caused by close distances.
 
I believe that how selfbuilt calculates the 1 m reading from the 5 m actual readings is by the equation:



((SQRT(5m reading)) x 5)^2
 
I re-did the DEFT FTP at 5 meters and un-focused the highest lux was 5,300. This would be 132,500 lux calculated at 1 meter.:eek:


The Dereelight R2 Aspherical remained at 2,500 at 5 meters. No matter how un-focused it just wouldn't go above 2,500 at 1 meter. Calculated for 1 meter is 62,500.

I have the Solarforce Masterpiece R2 and it does a whopping 1,947 lux at 5 meters. Calculated for 1 meter is 48,675.

That's more like it. I would still be interested in seeing some numbers from even farther. The DEFTs beam has still not matured at 5 meters. For accurate numbers you need to go to at least 10 meters if not 15.


I believe I saw 158k lux out of one version of the DEFT at one time, but I couldn't give you a source...
Yes that was my measurement using a DEFT Enthusiast model. That reading was taken at about 400' and calculated back. I think that was before the pre-collimator so the last of the Enthusiast models would have been over that figure.
 
Jose, try taking out the DEFT when it is especially foggy, you can actually see when the beam matures, it somewhat looks like an 'x' of light in the air.

The "x" is caused by the image flipping. The waist is not the maturation point however. That happens a bit farther out.

I was recently in Los Angeles an hour before daylight and observed a guy about half a block away with his back to me shining his light against a wall. I pulled out my DEFT FTP aimed it at him and fired it up. He raised his hands and slowly turned around. He came over to talk to me and said he thought he was being" lit up" by the cops. Needless to say, he was impressed when I showed him what I shined on him. He thought it was some big spot light. He had me write down the light information and the forum where he could get one. Fun experience... Love the DEFT! :)
 
recDNA - I had a Tiablo A9 with me and at that range (a half block) it's beam is so weak by comparison it appears to be a toy. I have always liked my A9 and still do but it is not even close to the DEFT for long range throw.

I know. I was thinking of how it compares with the Dereelight.
