Convoy L6 Throw vs. Flood reflector choice?

Hi!

I just received a new Convoy L6 and love the light, its an amazing beam from such a small form. I have the "As shipped" orange peel reflector installed but see they offer as an accessory a SMO reflector. I would primarily be using the light on the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers at night to find fishing jugs and reflectors set on my trot lines. Therefore a beam with more of a spot would be much preferred. Does anyone have the SMO reflector installed on their light and what do you think of it compared to the stock reflector? Thanks much!

From what I understand, the smooth reflector will add around 20-30k lux vs the orange peel reflector. You still won't have a monster throw flashlight though, as the XHP70 is a large die emitter, so won't be as narrow and focused of a pointsource as something like an XPL or XPG2.

The XHP70 (not .2 version) also will showcase a darker spot in the middle of the beam with the smooth reflector.

I do not have an L6 yet, but have been doing research about the smooth reflector in anticipation of getting one.

Hello Jerry! Your post caught my eye as I have upgraded my Convoy L6 with an SMO reflector. What I can say is this: there is a little bit improved throw, maybe about 10k to 20k more, not substantial enough to effectively double the throw. Compared to my smaller Convoy C8 SMO XPL HI 2.8A, this little light throws better. (90k+ lux)

There are some hardcore modding you can google to double the throw, but that involves de-doming, spring bypass, replacing some resistors on the MCPCB, etc, ontop of replacing the OP reflector. I think the max I saw was 160+ lux, at par with the Olight M2X-UT.

Lastly, if you are deciding to get the SMO or not, go ahead, the stock L6 could benefit a bit more throw.

+1 on the research! best to be sure before pulling the trigger! :)
