What would you guys recommend? Form factor would be small, but battery type doesn't matter or most anything else. I don't need strobe ability either, but I think in this price range everything comes with it.

Here bro, try this on for size and post the results here so the other guys can see what you need and they'll advise you accordingly.

They're not pretty but they know their lights

I used that discount for the Nitecore SR3. It is kind of big for a 1x123 light, but it does put out a lot of light a long, long way. To easily get the 8 modes with a ring twist (instead of cycling a clickie) makes this one pretty good for the money.

This is going to sound like the mother of all stupid questions to someone.

If this light gets 220 Lumens for 40 bucks, what does the Nitecore Smartring SR3 cost 120(60) bucks for?

The max stats look the same. Am I paying for the ability to turn the light down?

The short answer to this is that there is a lot more to comparing two lights than comparing their max output. Not to mention the fact that comparing the brightness stats between lights from different companies is borderline meaningless because there's so many different ways of measuring and rating the number of lumens.
