I just received my AccuManager 20 from Thomas Distributing and it does not seem to be operating correctly. When I insert a battery to be charged, the LED does not light for 3 seconds for the Diagnosis Phase, it begins to flash immediately, which means it is charging without reading the battery. Anyone else with this charger see this behavior?

Yes, mine does the same.

Also keep in mind that the charger needs to be reset before the start of the charging process (by unplugging and then plugging it)

Hi Dkelly,

That is not the way I understand it is supposed to work, at least not according to the manual. Sorry I do not have one, just tryin to help.

The LED's should come on solid for about 3 seconds then go to blinking.

Here is a section from the manual on that charger;
Charging:
- Diagnosis Phase: LED's are on for 3 second
- Charging Process: LED's are blinking
- Charging End: LED's remain on
- Failure/Defect: LED's remain off
- Float Charging: Automatic after charging ends (LED permanently on)

Some questions;
Have you tried some other batteries?
Have you tries some different manufacturers (i.e. some Duracells, some Eneloops, etc.)?
Have you tried some know good batteries?
Were the batteries possibly 'deeply' dicharged?
Did you make sure and power on the charger, then insert the batteries?

Have put eneloops, Kodak, and energizer in. They were in various states of discharge, but none were bad. If I unplug the charger, put the batteries in and then plug it back in, all lights come on for maybe two seconds, like a light test and then start blinking. If I leave it plugged in and just put the batteries in, they immediately blink. I was under the impression the only time that you needed to unplug it was if you had a battery that was deeply discharged.

My manual says to "reset" the charger between every charging cycle and to put in the batteries after the charger is plugged in.

So this gives the following procedure:
If there are full batteries in the charger, and the charger is plugged in: take the batteries out.
Unplug.
Plug in.
wait 3 seconds.
Put in empty batteries.

At least, thats how I understand the manual :)

I don't see that in my manual. This is quoted from my manual:

"As soon as the AccuManager20 is powered and the rechargeable
batteries are placed in the compartments, the charging process is
automatically triggered. Then communication between the batteries
and the charger starts. Initially, the LED's are on for 3 seconds (Battery
Diagnosis). During this time, the main battery parameters are
recorded. The appropriate charging algorithm for each battery
chemistry is defined. After this initiation phase, the LED'S begin to
blink, indicating that the charging process has started."

I understand the first line of this paragraph to mean that the charger is powered (plugged in) and then the batteries are placed in the compartment. The only place I see something to indicate putting the batteries in and then plugging in the charger is on the "Trouble Shooting" sheet that is added. Again quoted:

"The corresponding LED does not light:
- Battery can be deep discharged. Disconnect the charger from the power
supply and reconnected it after a couple of seconds leaving the batteries
in the slots.
During the first 3 seconds a special start support function sends a higher
current signal to the battery. The LED remains on for this short period of
time. If the charging process continues normally (LED's blinking) the
battery was deep-discharged and is now in good conditions. If the LED
switches off again, try the start support function again. In case the LED
does not blink, the battery is defect."

My instructions are in German and English (and I only read English:thinking:). Perhaps you have a different manual. Also, if I unplug the charger, put 1 battery in and leave the other slots empty, and then plug in the charger, all of the LED lights stay on the same amount of time, then go out except the one that has a battery in the slot. Looks more like a LED light check than a diagnostic mode.

The LEDs just start flashing when I put the batteries in the slot on mine and have done since I bought it. I was curious about the same thing, then I just figured that the charger analyzes the batteries fast enough that it just appears to skip that step and immediately begin to charge, if that makes any sense. It seems to work fine charging-wise though.

Does anyone out there have one that lights the LEDs for three seconds when the batteries are initially put in the slots?

The 3 second charge only occurs if the batteries are inserted prior to the power cord being plugged in.

If power is applied to the charger, THEN the batteries inserted, then it will charge normally.

So if you have a dead battery, you need to disconnect power, put the batteries in, then plug the charger back in. It will do it's 2-3 second initial "zap", then charging will ensue.
It's possible that might not be enough to jumpstart a very dead battery. You might have to unplug & replug a couple of times before the battery has a high enough voltage for the charging system to recognize it. I've been through this many many times.
