Hmm...Three easy ones right off the top of my head:

Ghost Story - Peter Straub, probably my single favorite

The Stand - Steven King, no introduction needed, just make sure you read the unabridged version

Fountainhead - Ayn Rand, again no introduction needed since its been voted again and again as one of the most influential novels ever

A tier or two down from the top:

Dune - Frank Herbert (can't believe I'm the first to say this)
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams (and of course the rest)
Ringworld - Larry Niven
Watership Down - Richard Adams
Cryptonomicon - Neil Stephenson
Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand (see above)
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card (and the rest of the series)
To Your Scattered Bodies Go - Philip Jose Farmer (and the rest of the series)
The Practice Effect - David Brin (and all the Uplift series)
1984 - George Orwell
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Jules Verne (and the sequel Mysterious Island and all the rest)
The Bourne Identity - Robert Ludlum (and the rest of the series and pretty much every one of his books)
The Call of the Wild - Jack London
ugh...thats enough

A couple other authors that can't be left out:

Terry Goodkind - The Sword of Truth series, best of which would probably be Faith of the Fallen

Clive Cussler - his Dirk Pitt series of novels. I've been reading him since the beginning and he's one of the best. Favorite is tough...probably have to say Treasure or Dragon.

W.E.B. Griffin - he's been around for a while, one of the best IMHO.

And more I can't currently think of...
