It's funny... or maybe not, Maybe it is this way for most people that hit middle age....

As I get older, most of the movies that I loved at different stages of life, some that such an impact on me that they actually had a part in defining my life, I now see as somewhat trite, if not downright stupid.

In my teens, the "man with no name" Clint Eastwood westerns and the James Bond movies were my favorites.

In my early to mid 20s just about any kind of war movie, and most action-adventure types were what I mostly watched, although none really stand out.

Late 20s to early 30s I liked the Star Wars and Indiana Jones stuff, but I also got into "the classics": Gone with the Wind, the Bogart films; especially Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, and many of the other 1940s Film Noir.

In my 40s I cut back on seeing many movies, what I did see were mostly comedies and action stuff.... Few stand out... Terminator, Blade Runner like Tomas mentioned, Silverado, Chariots of Fire, The Man Who Would be King...

Hit 50 and even fewer movies do I see, and even fewer do I remember. Lord of the Rings, is the only one that really makes the list.

But I guess my current favorite(for the last three years) is Lonesome Dove. I just finished watching the movie moments ago, for about the 12th time. Yesterday afternoon I just finished reading the book for about the 5th time. I enjoy every aspect of the movie, including the music. It always makes me want to go on one last "grand adventure" of my own, and it always makes me sad for several days because I probably won't be able to go on any last adventure.

Silviron, I agree - "Lonesome Dove" is Duvall's best, and a great ride through the Old West that really tugs on a wanderers' heart. Fantastic film.

I'd also vote for;

"Lawrence Of Arabia"

"Brazil" (I saw a few folks above include this one - didn't know anybody else even knew about it! Great sleeper....)

Roberto Benigni's "Life Is Beautiful"

Redford's "Jeremiah Johnson" (Silviron - you might like this one, if you haven't seen it - mountain man/indians/western/survival)

"Lord Of The Rings" is indeed fantastic - after reading the books, I never expected any movie to even come close - but they've pretty well done it justice (so far...)

"Fargo" was great (about any other Cohen(sp?) bros. films are a hoot, too)

The first "Alien" was the scariest movie of all time, IMO

Man, so many others I can't recall (must not have been that great, then...)

....Oh, yea - any Pink Panther/Peter Sellers flik (including Dr. Strangelove and Being There)

...and the original "Inlaws" (Alan Arkin, Peter Falk)

...and the Jack Lemmon/Walter Mattheau (sp?) movies

...all funny!

In no particular order.

Gamera III - The Revenge of Irys The last and best of the Gamera Kaiju rubber-suit monster movies. Dark yet hopeful, with titanic scenes of destruction and excellent special efx.

AI - Artificial Intelligence A flawed but thought-provoking effort from Spielberg.

Blade Runner Nuff said

Gattaca A beautiful, inspiring and thought provoking movie about predetermination, choice, will.

Lathe of Heaven A PBS adaptation of an Ursula K. LeGuin novella about a man whose dreams shape reality. It's really about how our thoughts can shape our own realities. It only exists as a copy of a video tape (master film was lost) so image quality sucks but is still worth a viewing.

Casablanca Bogey, Bergman, a stunning, luminous DVD transfer and a timeless story.

Ten Commandments Sure, Hollywood can blow $250 million on a blockbuster but there'll never again be a movie as grand as this.

Godzilla versus Monster Zero What can I say, one of the best Godzilla Kaijus

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Eastwood, Wallach, guns and gold. Nuff said.
