Are there any other clicky tailcaps that are compatible with the (old) Surefire U2?

I love my U2 - upgraded by Milkyspit to U2by2, but the tailcap switch has never felt right. It sort of "binds" when pressing and I did try a fix long ago which I believe involved bending some tabs inside.

If there are no compatible tailcaps does anyone know where I can by a replacement?

Thanks for any information.

I have an ugly solution.

Use the Netkids clicky conversion kit on a G2 switch and then it works fine on the U2. I gave it a shot last night and I was suprised to find that it worked fine.

I'm curious how a Z49 looks on a U2. Anybody got a pic?

Thanks Sgt.

I don't mind ugly. I just want a better feeling switch. I searched all over CPF & CPFMP and don't see a sales thread for "NetKidz" clicky conversion. I might PM him directly if I don't eventually find it.

Thanks for the tip!

Talk about ugly ^^ Just tried my G2Z tan tailcap on my U2A :green:

Is it possible that you have an old tailcap? Because the new one feel great, at least mine do. Same with the Z57, but I suspect they use the same innards anyway.

Eh... but, I've yet to see the Z49 look good on anything.

Thanks! Good timing, too:thumbsup:
Doesn't look too bad to me.
I like the Z49 on a 6P with a FM34 on the other end, too.

btw, I agree with Bernie that the newer Z59 feels better than the older one.

Besides the early, flat-sided U2 pictured previously, I also have a later, round-bodied U2. The newer tailcap feels better to me too.

Unfortunately, the new U2 tailcap does not work on the old body without a washer/shim.

There are also issues with the Z49 not working on all U2 lights. I don't know though if this is still the case with the newer U2s.

I have a round body U2, about 4-years old. It is the type that used a plastic insert in the body tube (which I removed to permit 18650).

If I push the clicky precisely in the center, it works OK. However, the switch wants to bind if not pushed exactly dead center.

I thought one of the Solarforce L2 tailcaps might work, but no go. I was really looking for a cheap fix and didn't want to spend $30-$40 bucks for a genuine SF part.

Thanks for all the informative discussion on this!

Adjusting the tabs on the old model U2 tailcap is still the best fix. If you use some 18650's that are longer than others you will need to lay a shim on top of the tailcap contact and screw the cap on. This, in effect, allows the tail cap to screw further down for good contact. There would be no tail cap problems with U2's if there were more threads on the body.

Call Surefire and they will send you a new better one for free.

You could try lubing yours and adjusting the tabs first, but SF are very nice and know the old U2 clickies had issues at times.

Thanks NoFair,

I think I will call Surefire today. I had emailed them in the past about it but never got a response. Heck, the SF factory is only about 20-minutes from my house.

Guess I will see how good the lifetime warranty really is.

Cheers!

FWIW: I tried a Z49 on a U2. It worked fine, but it made the light too long and the ergonomics didn't work for me, so I took it off, and now it's on a Milky-modded 3DL.

Any C-series tailcap will work. Now I have an RPM tailcap (with McClicky) on my U2. Meanwhile, the clicky tailcap from the U2 is now on my M3. :twothumbs

They sent me a new one when mine started to act up and I'm in Norway:thumbsup:
