Are the "improved" MCPCB's for the CREE's more efficient for thermal transfer?
When the CREE was originally introduced, there were two different types of MCPCB's it could have come mounted on, round and star. Both were considered very inefficient for heat transfer and several threads showed that the bare emitter mounted with AAA on copper or aluminum was much more efficient at removing heat.
I recently received a CREE mounted on what was called an "improved" star. The center slug is soldered to the star along with the positive and negative contacts. So, is this star close to the efficiency of a bare emitter or would I be better off, removing the emitter and mounting it directly to the Al surface?
