At 3 AM You Are Awaken By Sounds Outside Your Door... What Light Do You Want?

Between my family and my girlfriends family, nearly everyone is a cop, has been a cop, or is training to be a cop.. or is a Reserve.

I'm the only one who has a light other than a Mag 3D or Streamlight Stinger.

I'm also the only one who has any interest in keeping a gun nearby.

I find looking through a window to see who is there is best, but usually when I open a door to people I don't know (unless they are old, young, female, or in some kind of uniform, like UPS, Pizza Hut, etc..) I open the door a foot and keep my foot behind it so it can't be pushed open.

If for some reason I was holstered (1 in 100 chance) I might pull it up a little so it could be grabbed easily but it would have to be some thug with 10 pounds of clothes on.

To answer your question though, I would probably just grab whatever was around just in case I needed it, but I wouldn't let myself be alarmed.

It's silly to answer the door with a gun and light drawn.

However, even cops are trained to NEVER ignore that sixth sense.

Always be prepared for the worst, but never ignore that feeling it's fixing to happen :)

I have a SF E1B under my bed. But, more likely, my SF 6PL, attached to my Remington 870. The former for when I have an early morning at work, the latter for if I'm half-asleep (which you'd think is backwards in terms of safety, huh?)

Now, that being said, my front door is amazingly hard to see from any window in the house.

For things that go bump in the night, my Fenix TK11 and Glock 23 are always by my side.

I live in an apartment building, but one of my livingroom windows leads to a fire escape. The window is alarmed, but one always has to mentally prepare.

My Wife and I will be purchasing a home within the next year or so.
A home alarm system and outside motion sensor lights will be a must before we move in.

A DX photon! Stop em dead in their tracks!

Haha, I kid. Probably like the above stated a tigerlight with some sabre red.

Well, I might want to have an unwanted visitor "illuminated" by this:

But failing that, I'd most likely be using my E2DL.

The only Light I would want would be the surefire X200A weapon light that rides right below the barrel of my 45 XD

My Louisville Special, a bat with a hole drilled in the top for my E01. A front light that's always on, back motion lights and my dog (who's a pitbull, lab, rotweiller and retriever mutt) pretty much has made anyone by the house's presense known and/or deterred them not to mention everyone in my house but my dad are all night people and inside light let people know we're awake in here.

Which lights do that with a very low low. I have an LD10 but the low is around 10 lumens and a bit more than I would like.

The JetBeam III Military can do 2 lumens on lowest low - it is a two mode light, with the top mode always on max, and the lower mode programmable at levels down to 2 lumens, or various strobe modes.

It has a tactical forward clicky, and the mode is set via bezel turning.

It can also use 1x18650, 2xRC123A and 2xCR123A.

at 3am, i am likely to be still awake but..

My outside lights are always ON, the lights near my front door/terrace and lights on the yard.. plus movement activated sensor floodlights too.

peeking thru windows i have min. 10-20yards visibility every direction of my door and few mirrors to make it easier to see the "blindspots" without actually moving to plain sight..

so i can see who is there and how many..

if friendly, i can open the door..
if unknown i can backtrack to get the muzzleflash.

if lights are out i backtrack then too, to get something more dangerous with me, as then there is a problem..
and the cabinet where they are is connected to the same fuse as outside lights.. if the red light is on, the circuit is good and some of the outside lights should still be on.

*if i get up to see the bump on the door i am happy to take ANY light near by (currently likely tk11 or mag)

will take my cellphone to call help (official or friends)

and one of my blades. (in close quarters they are dangerous tools)

and i know i have baseballbats and other bluntforcetrauma tools dribbled along the way to and from the door.. every direction from door i know where the "help" is located.

in the darkness i can go without a flashlight with dark adapted eyes.. i know my house, can walk it thru even blind.

i originally thought of just putting this as answer: only the glimmer of ambient light from the blade.. one bright blade to scare ´em, one black blade to kill.

but that would of been exaggerating.

No light at all! When and if that happens I don't want to give my position away. My NEA Pardner is what I will grab for.:naughty:

No one keeps a Magcharger by the door or bed? I would have thought that would be a good choice, if and when I get one.

I say any light with an acute lead delivery system, ranging from 55 grains to 1 oz., would be sufficient.

Granted the last time I had a noise outside I pulled a 'Gran Torino' and wandered outside to see my mailbox being bashed with bats by idiots in a jeep. By pulling a 'Gran Torino' I mean my trust ole' M1 was the closest thing to me, with some Lake City M2 ball. I have since learned from that, five years ago.

just curious... what did you learn?

oddly my cell phone is always within reach and has enough light yet does not disturb night adapted eyes. the light i would grab would be what ever is currently in favor at the moment. currently this is a Ra EDC T.
if things went down hill i guess the flash of 180-230 grains would do nicely. probably wreck night adapted eyes though.

i've got a 6c rop with a custom bezel and a tigerlight with saber red next to the bed. so far the intercoms at the doors with a panel upstairs gives us a little seperation/ peace of mind and have work well so far. this years tax refund goes for an alarm system with cameras.

I recently had some bad experience with some ...... no-US flashlights.

So, I would DEFINATELY go with a Surefire M6/MN21 backed up with a mounted Surefire X300, 617 or Streamlight TLR-2. With your life on the line, would you trust anything else other than Made in USA?
